A six-week-old kitten named Elmer is recovering at the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT) after a harrowing encounter with industrial adhesive. Rescued by a compassionate Good Samaritan, Elmer was found trapped in a bucket of glue, which left him in critical condition.

When Elmer was brought to the shelter on March 31, he was entirely coated in thick glue, making it impossible for him to eat, drink, or groom himself. Cassie Davidson, HSNT’s senior director of marketing and communications, described the kitten’s condition upon arrival. “He was limp, severely dehydrated, and in critical condition. Our team recognised the urgency right away and began lifesaving care immediately,” Davidson recounted.
The circumstances that led to Elmer’s predicament remain unclear, although it is believed that he stumbled into the adhesive and became ensnared. The shelter’s staff quickly assessed that swift action was required to prevent the glue from hardening further, which could impede Elmer’s breathing and mobility. Remarkably, the glue had begun to solidify around his mouth, ears, and eyes.
Initial attempts to remove the adhesive were unsuccessful, as HSNT staff experimented with various oils and cleaning solutions, including olive oil and dish soap. However, after some trial and error, they determined that canola oil would be the most effective and safest solution. Davidson explained how crucial the method was, saying, “We used nearly two gallons of canola oil to break down the adhesive over a four-hour period.”
This meticulous process involved staff members gently massaging the oil into the glue to gradually free Elmer from his sticky confines. “This was a labour-intensive procedure that demanded patience and teamwork,” Davidson noted. “Without this effort, Elmer would almost certainly not have survived.” Throughout the treatment, Elmer managed to remain calm, cooperating with his rescuers even as the hours ticked by.
After the adhesive was successfully removed, the tiny kitten warmed up to human interaction. Davidson observed his newfound affinity for affection, stating, “Now that he’s feeling better, he has come to expect his spa treatments and is quite demanding when it comes to receiving pets and attention.”
Elmer’s recovery is steadily progressing, and following a few days at the shelter, he was moved into a foster home to continue receiving treatment. This included ongoing care for areas that had become irritated during the adhesive removal process. Currently, he has returned to HSNT for additional tests and monitoring, but it seems the most challenging part of his recuperation is behind him.
“It’s important to note that Elmer isn’t ready for adoption just yet,” Davidson clarified. “He will remain under the watchful eye of our medical team while we await the results of his remaining tests to ensure he is perfectly healthy before embarking on his next chapter.”
