A 16-year-old student from Jersey Shore High School in Pennsylvania has been celebrated for her quick thinking and bravery in saving her grandfather’s life during a medical emergency. Layla Melodie took decisive action when her grandfather, Kenneth Leitch, suffered a cardiac arrest on April 1. Her heroic efforts drew praise from local officials and community members alike.
The incident unfolded when Leitch, who has dedicated nearly 50 years to serving as assistant chief of the Avis Volunteer Fire Company, collapsed unexpectedly. Layla immediately sprang into action, performing CPR until first responders arrived on the scene. Her rapid response has been credited with playing a crucial role in preserving her grandfather’s life.

At a special voting session for the Clinton County Board of Commissioners held in Lock Haven, Layla was publicly recognised for her heroic actions. Commissioner Angela Harding commended the teenager for her remarkable skill and composure under pressure. “In the moment of a true emergency, Layla acted swiftly and decisively,” she noted, emphasising the gravity of the situation and the importance of Layla’s role in the outcome.

Lori Rhoads, a Quality Assurance Supervisor with the county’s Department of Emergency Services, echoed these sentiments, stating that without Layla’s selfless response, the situation could have ended in tragedy. The recognition event was emotional for Layla, who expressed her feelings through tears as she received a proclamation from the commissioners, along with a CPR Save pin for her bravery.
The ceremony also provided an opportunity for Leitch’s wife to express her gratitude. She thanked Layla and the other members of the fire company for their prompt actions, acknowledging that without their interventions, her husband might not have survived. “We are so grateful to Layla and all of his brothers from the fire company,” she stated, highlighting the unity and support prevalent in their community during such challenging times.
The recognition did not stop with the commissioners; Layla’s school district also honoured her courage. The Jersey Shore Area School District took to social media to celebrate Layla’s actions, remarking that her bravery serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of lifesaving skills.
Layla has aspirations of pursuing a career in emergency medicine, specifically as a trauma nurse, and her recent experience may further fuel her passion. By acting decisively and effectively in a moment of crisis, she has demonstrated not just her potential for a future in healthcare, but also a commitment to helping others, a core value in the field.
The report of Layla’s actions serves to highlight the critical importance of training in first aid and CPR. Her ability to respond effectively in an emergency illustrates that such skills can make a profound difference in the lives of individuals and families, underscoring the value of preparedness.
As the community of Jersey Shore rallies around Layla and her family, her story serves as both a tribute to her grandfather’s legacy in the fire service community, as well as a reminder of the impact that individuals can have in the face of adversity. The impact of her actions will not be forgotten, and the lessons learned from this experience will resonate well beyond the immediate situation.
