The 70-year-old musician, best known for hits like “Rebel Yell”, shared his excitement following the announcement made on 13 April. “It’s incredible. I’m really excited,” he said, revealing how he first learned of his induction. Idol spoke with his manager days prior, but it wasn’t until he shared the news with long-time collaborator Steve Stevens that the emotional weight of the achievement hit him. “I got quite emotional,” he admitted, emphasising the importance of the recognition from his peers in the music industry.

Idol’s career has been driven by passion rather than the pursuit of fame. He pointed out that he had never anticipated achieving major success. “I was doing it for the love in the first place,” he stated, affirming his commitment to creating music for over five decades. He expressed gratitude for the journey, remarking, “If that has resonated with the other musicians in the Rock Hall, then that’s fantastic.”
The musician has remained active in recent years, embarking on a major tour and releasing two EPs along with a full-length album. Additionally, he premiered a documentary entitled *Billy Idol Should Be Dead*, highlighting a dynamic phase of his career. Reflecting on his current trajectory, Idol noted, “We’ve been building towards this, and it’s a perfect payoff. You couldn’t have dreamed it better, really. It’s absolutely perfect.”
In addition to Idol, this year’s inductees include iconic figures such as Joy Division/New Order and Oasis, alongside celebrated acts like Wu-Tang Clan and the late Luther Vandross. The induction ceremony will also honour numerous influential figures. Artists such as Celia Cruz, Fela Kuti, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons will receive the Early Influence Award, while the Musical Excellence Award will go to luminaries such as Linda Creed, Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller, and Rick Rubin. Meanwhile, Ed Sullivan will be recognised with the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
During his conversation with *Rolling Stone*, Idol took time to commend several fellow inductees. He described Sade, Vandross, Collins, Joy Division/New Order, and Oasis as “fantastic” artists. Idol also acknowledged the significance of hip-hop within the Rock Hall, encouraging recognition of its “rock & roll attitude,” especially in light of Wu-Tang Clan’s inclusion.
Reflecting on his own musical journey, Idol reminisced about his early aspirations. From the tender age of seven, he dreamed of being part of a rock band. “I dreamt about it for years. I never really knew if I was going to get a chance,” he recalled. The advent of punk music opened avenues for aspiring musicians like himself, allowing those who may not have been classically trained to find their place in the scene. “It changed the playing field,” he explained, noting how the genre welcomed a diverse range of talent.
Looking ahead, the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is set to take place on 14 November at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, where it will be recorded for broadcast in December on ABC and Disney+. As the event draws nearer, Idol’s long-standing legacy and contributions to the music world will be celebrated alongside an array of influential artists, marking a monumental moment in his storied career.
This induction serves as a testament not only to Idol’s enduring impact on the music industry but also to his unyielding passion for creativity and connection through music. He has consistently reminded fans and fellow musicians alike that, at the heart of it all, music is a profound expression of love and artistry.
