**Saige Mosingo: Embracing Scars as Symbols of Strength After Battling Cancer**
At just 13 years old, Saige Mosingo faced an unimaginable challenge that would profoundly shape her identity and outlook on life. Originating from Michigan, the now 27-year-old has bravely shared her cancer journey on TikTok and beyond, finding power and beauty in her scars amassed over a long fight against breast cancer.

Mosingo’s ordeal began on 8 May 2012 when she was diagnosed with a Phyllodes tumor, a rare and malignant breast tumour. Initially, doctors believed the growth to be benign, and her family anticipated a straightforward recovery. However, everything took a sudden turn when Saige’s mother received a distressing call revealing the true nature of the tumour. “It was a shock, not only to me but to my family,” she shared. “I kept thinking there is no way this is happening to me; I am too young, this has to be a bad dream.”

Phyllodes tumours account for less than 1% of all breast tumours and are typically found in women over 40. They develop in the connective tissue of the breast, behaving differently from more common forms of breast cancer. Faced with this unexpected diagnosis, Mosingo’s immediate response was one of determination. Within a month of the diagnosis, she underwent a mastectomy, as chemotherapy and radiation were not suitable options for her case.
In the years that followed her surgery, Mosingo found herself in a long and arduous recovery process that involved regular monitoring by a team of specialists. Every six months for five years, she was assessed by the Breast Cancer and Sarcoma department at the University of Michigan. However, healing from such a significant life event went beyond the physical; it required her to navigate a complex emotional landscape, especially as an adolescent.
The pressures of middle school, combined with the psychological impact of her surgery, added layers of difficulty to Mosingo’s recovery. “I struggled significantly with self-image,” she recalled. “It was tough finding my bearings in a world where children can often be unkind.” Despite her bravery, she encountered bullying during her recovery, which exacerbated feelings of isolation. “I often felt alone, pretending that everything was fine while grappling with my internal struggles.”
Mosingo’s teenage years were marked by a complicated relationship with her body — one characterised by both grief for what she had lost and resilience in her fight for self-acceptance. Over time, she began to reframe her experiences. “I spent years grieving something I never had,” she explained, acknowledging the emotional weight this journey carried.
As the years passed, something remarkable began to shift within her. “It took me a long time to learn to love my body and my scars,” she said. Instead of viewing her experience as a curse, she started to embrace the notion that her cancer journey had bestowed upon her a renewed purpose. “I realised I could be a light for others, sharing my story to help those in similar circumstances. I learned to play the hand I was dealt, seeing cancer as my second chance,” she remarked.
Following her mastectomy, Mosingo underwent multiple reconstruction procedures, which included the use of tissue expanders and implants. This journey spanned over a decade, requiring her to adapt to the continuous changes in her body. “Watching my skin stretch during the expansion process was surreal,” she recalled, detailing the unique sensations associated with each step of the reconstructive journey. Unfortunately, complications led to additional surgeries, which further complicated her path to acceptance.
Reflecting on her experiences, Mosingo acknowledged the difficulty of embracing her new body. “It was hard learning to love my incoming scars, particularly after such an extended period of change. I believe it was not until I turned 25 that I began to fully embrace them,” she stated. Today, she no longer hides her scars; instead, she celebrates them as symbols of strength and resilience.
“My scars are big, bold and now represent beauty and strength to women all over the world,” she passionately expressed. She candidly admits that while she has made significant progress, the journey to self-love is ongoing and not without its challenges. “I still experience difficult days where I wrestle with self-acceptance, a reminder that I am human,” she concluded.
Mosingo’s journey from fear to empowerment reflects her determination to find beauty in adversity. Through her TikTok and other platforms, she continues to inspire countless others, using her experiences as a beacon of hope and resilience in the face of life’s challenges.
