Friend Charged After Father Dies While Saving Family Members from House Fire

In a tragic incident on April 7, Marine veteran Horace Oates Jr. lost his life while heroically rescuing his family from a devastating house fire in Toledo, Ohio. The fire broke out at approximately 3 a.m. in a home located on Evansdale Avenue, which was housing nine occupants at the time. The fire claimed not only Oates’s life but also the family’s pets and their car, while several others were injured and required hospital treatment.

Horace Oates Jr., who served in the United States Marine Corps, was lauded for his bravery by family members. According to his stepdaughter, Breonna Blackwell, he displayed remarkable courage as he helped guide his loved ones to safety. Blackwell recounted how Oates managed to rescue her mother, a three-month-old baby, and his second oldest child by pushing them down the stairs just before the fire engulfed the home. “My mom told me that he grabbed her, the baby, and his second oldest and pushed them all down the stairs,” she shared.

The heroic actions displayed by Oates were attributed to his military training, according to Blackwell, who noted that he received assistance from her uncle during the rescue efforts. She expressed profound loss, stating, “I feel like he died doing what he learned.” Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, Oates was the only family member who did not make it out alive.

In total, eight individuals, including family members, were taken to hospital following the incident. The conditions of those hospitalised were said to be under assessment. Tragically, the family’s pets, including birds, cats, and dogs, did not survive the fire. The Toledo Fire & Rescue department confirmed the fatality in a statement, referring to Oates as the civilian victim of the fire. An investigation into the cause of the blaze is currently ongoing.

The circumstances surrounding the fire took a more sinister turn with the arrest of 44-year-old Cory Allen, a family friend of the Oates family. Allen has been charged with murder after it was alleged that he started the fire. WTVG reported that he was apprehended the morning after the incident, around 8 a.m. He had reportedly remained close to the area following the fire and was seen walking around the block, raising suspicions among those who knew him.

Blackwell indicated that the family was shocked to learn that Allen, who had remained in their vicinity after the fire, was connected to its cause. “He stayed around here after the house caught fire… I didn’t know he started it,” she disclosed, highlighting her family’s sense of betrayal and confusion at the revelation.

In light of this tragedy, the community has rallied to support the Oates family. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist with expenses, aiming for a goal of £3,500. By 11 a.m. on Friday, the page had garnered approximately £1,100 in donations, reflecting the outpouring of compassion and solidarity from local residents and others touched by Oates’s sacrifice.

As the investigation progresses, many in Toledo are mourning the loss of a dedicated serviceman while also grappling with the shocking nature of the incident. Horace Oates Jr.’s bravery in the face of danger serves as a poignant reminder of the selflessness exhibited by those in service to their country and their families. The community continues to remember not only the tragedy of the fire but also the courage of a father who gave his life for those he loved.
