Ben Sherry, a young man from San Diego, has experienced a dramatic transformation in his life journey, thanks to a toupee that has garnered significant attention on social media. At the tender age of 19, while still a sophomore in college, Sherry first observed his hair thinning. Initial comments from friends during reunions highlighted this unwelcome change, leaving him increasingly self-conscious about his appearance.

As he examined photographs of himself, Sherry realised that the image no longer matched his youthful self-image. Despite his efforts to accept his new reality, he ultimately acknowledged that he was balding. Like many men facing male pattern baldness, a genetic condition leading to progressive hair loss, Sherry felt compelled to explore options to combat this change.

His search began with minoxidil, an FDA-approved topical treatment aimed at promoting hair regrowth. However, after several months of application without noticeable results, his self-esteem further deteriorated as he fixated on his hairline. “Staring at myself in the mirror, I felt trapped in a negative mindset. It was detrimental to my self-image,” Sherry confided in a recent interview.
Subsequently, he turned to finasteride, an oral prescription for hair loss, but became concerned about potential side effects, including a higher risk of prostate cancer and sexual dysfunction, prompting him to reconsider the long-term implications of such treatments. Sherry also explored non-medical alternatives, from hair fibres to dermarollers, but found these methods ineffective or too painful.
During the final years of his college experience, Sherry stumbled upon the Instagram and TikTok account of Emily Alexis Ann Cheney, widely recognised as the “Toupee Queen.” Captivated by the remarkable transformations showcased on her platform, he initially dismissed the idea of a toupee due to financial constraints and the stigma attached to such a decision.
Fast-forward to the beginning of 2025, Sherry found himself well-positioned financially as he worked as an admissions counsellor. With Cheney’s salon just a short drive away, he decided it was time to invest in a hair system. Though he shared his intentions with only one friend, the decision felt somewhat impulsive yet undeniably exciting for him.
During his initial appointment, Sherry likened the experience to a therapeutic session. After sending a few photographs of his hair for reference, he and Cheney collaborated on selecting the right style and colour for his new hair system. The next step involved shaving the top of his head, a moment that he acknowledged could be jarring as it marked a significant acceptance of his situation.
When he finally stepped out of the salon chair and looked in the mirror, Sherry experienced a rush of emotions. For the first time in years, he felt proud of the image reflecting back at him. His new hair system allowed him to appreciate not only his appearance but also the personal growth he had achieved during his college journey, including the fitness accomplishments he had made.
As he settled into his new look over the following weeks, Sherry noticed a shift in how others perceived him. Friends remarked on how great he looked, prompting him to reflect on the influence of hair on self-image and validation. A viral TikTok post showcasing his transformation has since amassed millions of likes, capturing the interest of a wider audience eager to witness his journey.
Now, nearly a year after getting the toupee, Sherry emphasises the confidence it has instilled in him. He no longer views his worth as solely tied to his hairline but appreciates the sense of comfort he feels in his skin, regardless of whether he chooses to wear the toupee or not.
When questioned about how long he intends to continue using the hair system, Sherry remains uncertain. His perspective has shifted, and he recognises that embracing baldness, should he choose to, no longer appears daunting. “I’ve grown more at ease with the idea,” he explained. “It’s empowering to know that I control my self-image through the choices I make daily.”
While the decision to invest in a hair system is significant, Sherry believes that self-acceptance and positivity are paramount. He advocates for viewing oneself through a lens of appreciation rather than criticism, reinforcing the notion that the choices guiding our appearance can significantly affect our inner perspective.
