Wróblewska was initially hesitant to take on the role of a tour guide, primarily because she had never done such a thing professionally. However, tempted by the opportunity to engage with someone from across the Atlantic, and recalling her deep roots in Warsaw, she ultimately accepted. “I decided, ‘Okay, okay. Why not?’” she shared, reflecting on her choice to embrace the situation.
Their first meeting was marked by curiosity and a hint of nervousness. Nuwer could scarcely contain his astonishment upon recognising Wróblewska, while she, in turn, had seen him in numerous American television interviews. As the day unfolded, the two strangers explored the city, following in the footsteps of Nuwer’s ancestors. Although Wróblewska did not initially sense a romantic spark, the day progressed well, leading to meaningful conversations that transcended typical first-date chatter.
They discussed their respective family backgrounds – Nuwer revealed he had been divorced and had an adult son, while Wróblewska mentioned her duties caring for her elderly parents and her adult daughter living in the UK. Over the next few years, their long-distance relationship thrived, with Wróblewska visiting the United States every couple of months and Nuwer making frequent trips back to Poland. In 2017, they formalised their union with a small wedding at Nuwer’s home in Indiana. The ceremony was modest, featuring friends, colleagues, and Nuwer’s son, Adam. It was a joyous occasion that marked the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
However, life’s unpredictability soon presented them with a challenge. Following their wedding, Wróblewska’s parents passed away within a short span of time. Faced with the loss, she opted to close this chapter of her life in Poland and fully embrace her new beginnings with Nuwer in Indiana. The couple now finds happiness situated in Fairbanks, Alabama, where Nuwer works as a journalist and Wróblewska continues her career in accounting.
Despite the challenges they faced, the couple speaks about their relationship with a profound sense of gratitude and affection. Their friends often refer to them as “GosiaandHank,” a term that embodies their unity. “Together we make one lighthouse beacon of joy,” Nuwer shared, noting how their partnership has led to personal growth and exploration of deeper emotions.
