Boy, 13, Dies After Crocodile Dragged Him into River While He Played Soccer with Friends

A tragic incident unfolded in Indonesia on Monday, March 30, when a 13-year-old boy, Muhammad Abidzhar, lost his life after being attacked by a crocodile in the Mahakam River. The young boy was reportedly playing with his friends when the accident occurred in the Kutai Kartanegara Regency. His body was later discovered nearly a mile downstream from the location where he fell into the water.

According to local reports, Abidzhar and his friends were engaged in a game of football when their ball accidentally landed in the river. In an attempt to retrieve it, Abidzhar waded into the murky water. This seemingly innocent act quickly turned fatal when a crocodile attacked him, dragging him beneath the surface. Panic ensued among his friends, who promptly alerted authorities for assistance.

The Relawan Anggana Fire Rescue team, alongside various agencies and volunteers, launched an extensive search operation for the missing boy. Efforts to locate Abidzhar were hindered by challenging weather conditions, including strong currents and high tides. Miery Sulindra, head of the Anggana Fire and Rescue Post, stated that the presence of wildlife posed a significant challenge during the rescue efforts. He remarked, “Indeed, the main obstacle in the field is wild animals. There are quite a lot of crocodiles at that location.”

As rescue teams scoured the area, several large crocodiles were reportedly spotted in the river, raising concerns about the dangers posed to searchers. Despite these challenges, the joint search and rescue team persevered, utilising various boats and diving equipment in their efforts.

In the evening, local fishermen made the grim discovery of Abidzhar’s body around 8 p.m. and alerted the joint rescue team, prompting an immediate response to retrieve the remains. Sulindra noted that Abidzhar’s body was found floating, not being carried by the animal, which offered some clarification on the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

Officials confirmed that Abidzhar’s body had drifted approximately 1.57 kilometres (almost a mile) downstream from the site of the attack. Following the recovery of his remains, they were transported to a nearby funeral home, where arrangements for the boy’s final rites were made.

The incident has highlighted the ongoing risks associated with crocodiles in the region, particularly in areas where people frequent rivers. Many locals are aware of the presence of these dangerous reptiles, and the situation serves as a sobering reminder of the potential hazards that can arise from seemingly harmless activities near water sources.
