Deborah Ann Woll, renowned for her portrayal of Karen Page in the hit series “Daredevil,” has opened up about her tumultuous childhood experiences with bullying and how they continue to shape her life today. At a recent launch event for the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again” held in New York City, Woll candidly shared her reflections on overcoming personal challenges and her journey to self-acceptance.

The actress, now 41, recounted the harsh realities of being bullied during her formative years and how those experiences have left a lasting impact. “I was bullied pretty terribly when I was a kid. Even to this day, so much of my identity and what I think of myself is formed by those kids,” she revealed. However, despite these struggles, Woll expressed pride in her growth and resilience.

“While I wish I was maybe farther along than I am, I do think about the fact that I do this job, that I put myself out there, that I’m a parent and a spouse. These are all things that maybe that 13 or 14-year-old kid wouldn’t have believed was possible,” she stated, highlighting her personal and professional achievements.
Woll is no stranger to discussing her mental health. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter back in 2018, she addressed her experiences with anxiety, stating, “I have anxiety, and I think whether I want it to or not, that pops up in my roles.” She described her anxiety as a source of motivation rather than a weakness, framing it as a catalyst for courage in the face of fear.
In “Daredevil: Born Again,” Woll reprises her role of Karen Page—a character she brought to life in the original “Daredevil” series from 2015 to 2018, as well as in the crossover series “The Defenders” and “The Punisher.” The new season sees the return of several original cast members, including Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, the menacing Kingpin.
The second season of “Born Again” follows Daredevil as he combats the corruption surrounding the mayor’s office in New York City. Woll teased fans about the evolution of her character, noting that this season marks a significant shift in Karen’s moral framework. “Karen has always kind of existed within the confines of the law, the confines of right and wrong, and I think this is the first year that all of that has been lifted,” she remarked.
As the storyline progresses, Karen challenges societal norms and navigates her own boundaries, a development that undoubtedly tests her character’s limits. “She’s constantly pushed those boundaries. Now the boundaries aren’t even there, so we get to see how far she will go when no one is stopping her,” Woll explained.
This season also explores the burgeoning romantic relationship between Karen and Matt Murdock. Cox shared insights into their dynamic, revealing that Matt is grappling with self-doubt and increasingly relying on Karen’s guidance. “He really kind of defers to her in terms of what to action, and then he just goes and does it,” Cox noted, suggesting a shift from Matt’s previous independence in decision-making.
Season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again” has also presented Woll with new challenges, including advanced martial arts training as part of her role preparation. “I’ve done a lot of fight training for different disciplines over the years, but this was a new one, and more in the martial arts world,” she said, indicating her commitment to authentically embodying her character.
New episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again” are set to be released every Tuesday on Disney+, inviting fans to witness not only the thrilling action sequences but also the deeper character explorations that enhance the narrative. As Woll continues to confront her past while bringing Karen Page to life, her story serves as an inspiration for many, demonstrating that overcoming adversity opens doors to new possibilities.
