In a heartfelt account shared with PEOPLE, Jenna Erwin discussed her unexpected journey of motherhood after having twins, one of whom was diagnosed with Down syndrome shortly after birth. The revelation struck her and her husband Tanner deeply, as they were not prepared for the possibility of such a diagnosis despite having received normal results from prenatal screenings.

Jenna, a trained pediatric nurse, experienced sheer delight when she first discovered she was pregnant on Thanksgiving Day in 2024. However, happiness soon turned to astonishment eight weeks later when the couple learned they were expecting twins—a boy and a girl. In a viral TikTok video, Jenna expressed the mix of surprise and excitement felt at the prospect of welcoming two children.

During a routine 12-week scan, doctors flagged a thicker nuchal fold on the neck of one baby, a soft marker that may indicate genetic conditions like Down syndrome. Despite this early concern, subsequent genetic testing indicated no chromosomal abnormalities in either twin. Following a detailed anatomy scan, physicians reassured the Erwins that everything appeared normal, leading them to believe that their pregnancy was progressing smoothly.
As the pregnancy continued, repeated scans appeared to confirm this positive outlook, with Jenna stating that at the 24-week check-up, maternal-fetal medicine specialists released her from further observation. The family, which already included a two-year-old daughter named Palmer, felt confident going forward.
Everything changed when Jenna gave birth at just over 35 weeks. While she remained blissfully unaware of any complications, Tanner immediately recognised signs consistent with Down syndrome upon seeing their daughter after delivery. Jenna recalled feeling an overwhelming shock when Tanner broke the news to her shortly after they returned to the delivery room. “Being told the whole pregnancy that everything looks perfect and then to have your baby be diagnosed with a genetic condition is not how anyone expects delivery to go,” she reflected.
Ten days post-birth, the chromosomal analysis confirmed the diagnosis. The Erwins were left wondering why it had not been detected earlier, to which doctors explained that prenatal screenings can sometimes yield false negatives. Jenna further remarked that an amniocentesis—a procedure used to diagnose genetic disorders—had not been deemed necessary at the time, as their earlier tests returned normal results.
Drawing on her professional experience, Jenna sought to find positivity amid the barrage of emotions following the diagnosis. “As a pediatric nurse, I am no stranger to kids with Down syndrome, and they are always the happiest patients!” she shared, focusing on the joy that their daughter, Elle, could bring to their family.
Elle spent a little over a month in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), which allowed the family to adjust to the demands of a larger household, moving from one to two children before bringing Elle home. Despite being a relatively easy baby, Jenna noted that the family faces the challenge of frequent medical appointments, as Elle has hypothyroidism and a heart condition that requires regular check-ups with specialists.
As she reflects on her experiences, Jenna admits that better pre-diagnosis preparation might have transformed their initial birth experience. She expressed regret that the unexpected news of Elle’s condition overshadowed the joy of safely delivering twins. “I was too busy thinking about how this was missed and what our future would look like, when I should have been focused on celebrating the birth of my children,” she lamented.
Despite the challenges, Jenna emphasises the importance of embracing all emotions surrounding motherhood and unexpected developments. She encourages other parents to acknowledge their feelings, whether they be fear, surprise, or anxiety, as part of the journey. Jenna reassured others that often, “a greater plan is being formed behind the scenes” even when faced with unforeseen circumstances.
Now looking forward, Jenna describes Elle as “the light of our lives” and expresses a commitment to ensuring that she feels loved and celebrated. “Though it might not have been the experience we expected, she is a cheerful baby who brings joy to our home,” Jenna remarked, reminding parents to stay open to the joy that can accompany the unexpected turns in life.
