In early 2023, a seemingly ordinary health check turned into a life-altering revelation for Angelique Laliotis, a 27-year-old woman from the UK. After discovering a sizeable lump in her breast while in the shower, Laliotis found herself grappling with a diagnosis of grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, a severe form of breast cancer. This shocking news came after years of benign breast lumps that had previously posed no health threat.

Having a history of non-cancerous lumps since the age of 19, Laliotis was understandably taken aback by the severity of her condition. Her prior experiences had left her with a false sense of security, compounded by the absence of any accompanying symptoms apart from the new lump, which she described as being “the size of an egg.” After undergoing a necessary ultrasound, she learned that the cancer had also spread to her lymph nodes, complicating her prognosis and treatment options further.
Laliotis’s treatment journey began with the need for chemical menopause, as her cancer was hormone-positive, and she was advised to undergo in vitro fertilisation (IVF) to preserve her fertility. This dual process was daunting and overwhelming for her, especially as she had just received the diagnosis. She recalls, “It was really overwhelming… I had to decide what I wanted to do to preserve my fertility.” Ultimately, she managed to complete one round of IVF, involving egg retrieval surgery, before commencing the aggressive cancer treatment.
The intensity of Laliotis’s treatment regimen included 16 rounds of chemotherapy, three weeks of radiotherapy, and surgical intervention to remove the tumour. During this challenging period, she experienced severe side effects: “I was very sick, and it caused all my hair to fall out, which left me quite unwell for a time,” she shared. This physical and emotional turmoil dramatically reshaped her self-image and perspective on life. “Emotionally, going through cancer completely changed my perspective on life and my relationships,” she reflected.
Throughout her difficult journey, Laliotis found solace and strength in the unwavering support of her family and friends. She expressed profound gratitude to her partner, brother, and extended family, who rallied around her during her darkest moments. “There was so much love, and I am so grateful,” she noted, underscoring the importance of a strong support network in times of crisis.
As she continues to recover, Laliotis now adheres to a daily medication regime to manage the effects of chemical menopause and receives bone infusions every six months to counteract the treatment’s long-term repercussions. Though she is back on her feet and has since enjoyed trips to Australia and Greece, reminders of her past battle occasionally surface, leading to moments of anxiety. “I can be in the happiest moment of my life, and it will still creep up. When I have any sort of aches or pains, I wonder, is the cancer back?” she admitted.
Despite these challenges, Laliotis maintains an optimistic outlook on her future. She emphasises the significance of gratitude in her recovery journey, stating, “I try to live my life with so much gratitude and appreciation.” Her experience has not only strengthened her resilience but has also inspired her to appreciate the everyday moments that life offers.
Angelique Laliotis’s battle with cancer illustrates the profound impact of support systems, the importance of mental health during illness, and the remarkable human capacity for gratitude and appreciation—even amidst adversity. Her journey serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the ability to find strength in even the toughest of circumstances. With a renewed focus on living life fully, Laliotis is a testament to the power of hope and determination in the face of life-altering challenges.
