Fans of the Avatar franchise can look forward to more sequels, as production moves forward for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. Rae Sanchini, an executive producer on the recently released Avatar: Fire and Ash, has confirmed that work on the two upcoming films is progressing well, although scheduled release dates remain uncertain.

Sanchini spoke about the film franchise’s future in an interview published on April 1, stating that budgeting, scheduling, and pre-production efforts are actively taking shape. “Right now we’re figuring out the schedule,” she remarked, underlining the team’s dedication to advancing the project. “We’re working hard on it right now, building out our new pipeline for them. As far as we’re concerned, we’re full speed ahead.”

While the release of Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 is currently slated for 2029 and 2031 respectively, Sanchini described these dates as “tentative,” indicating that further adjustments could occur. Producers aim to finalise actual release dates in the near future, showcasing both caution and optimism in the planning process.

The anticipation for these films follows the successful reception of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which surpassed the remarkable milestone of $1 billion at the global box office shortly after its release. To date, the movie has grossed a staggering $1.48 billion, cementing the franchise’s position among cinematic giants. The original 2009 Avatar and the 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, also occupy the first and third spots among the highest-grossing films of all time, respectively.

Sanchini also revealed that James Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment, is adopting new technology to enhance the visual experience of the upcoming sequels. By utilising a “more generally accessible platform,” the team hopes to elevate the storytelling and spectacle that has become synonymous with the Avatar series. “We have the scripts; they’re brilliant,” she added, indicating a high level of confidence in the direction of the forthcoming films.

In January, he noted that the team’s ability to continue the franchise hinges on finding ways to manage production costs effectively.
