NCT’s Mark Lee to Exit K-Pop Group After 10 Years: ‘It’s a Quest That I Myself Am Scared About’

Lee Mark, a prominent member of the K-pop group NCT, has announced his departure from the group after a decade of collaboration. The Canadian rapper and singer, known for his considerable talent, made the announcement via a heartfelt handwritten note posted on Instagram on Thursday, April 2. He expressed his gratitude towards fans and reflected on his journey with NCT, which has now come to a close.

In his message, Lee articulated a deep sense of appreciation for the support he received from fans throughout his career. He stated, “Out of all the things my heart wants to say right now, I truly wish to say thank you. Thank you for loving, supporting, and shaping me to become who I am today.” His words resonated with many, as they poignantly encapsulated the emotions of both his fans and himself as they face this significant change.

Lee continued his note by conveying hope for the future, suggesting that his departure was not the end of an era but rather the beginning of a new chapter. “I truly believe that our hearts have better sight than our eyes, and what my heart sees right now isn’t a closing door but rather an opening new one,” he wrote. The management’s acknowledgment of Lee’s contributions to NCT aimed to assure fans of their ongoing support for him in this next phase of his life.

The entertainment company also specified that Lee would conclude all activities as a member of NCT, which encompasses both NCT 127 and NCT DREAM. SM Entertainment expressed their gratitude for Lee’s exceptional talent and versatility over the years, emphasising that he had delivered memorable performances as part of the group. “We are truly grateful for the time he spent with us, and we wholeheartedly support him as he begins a new chapter in his journey,” the statement articulated.

As Lee steps away, NCT will now transition into a new phase. NCT 127 will continue as a seven-member ensemble consisting of Johnny, Taeyong, Yuta, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Jungwoo, and Haechan. On the other hand, NCT DREAM will form a six-member group with Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung leading the way. The restructuring signifies not just the evolution of the groups but also the ongoing support from SM Entertainment to maintain the legacy and success of NCT.

Lee Mark’s journey in the K-pop industry began when he moved from Toronto to Seoul in 2012 to pursue his dream as an SM Entertainment trainee. He made his debut with NCT U in 2016, later becoming a member of both NCT 127 and NCT DREAM. Besides his work with these groups, Lee also joined SuperM in 2019 and has embarked on a solo career, with his debut album, “The Firstfruit,” released in April 2025.
