A Texas mother is capturing the hearts of many by sharing the inspirational story of her daughter, Oakley. Kennidi Werley, aged 31, has opened up about the challenging journey her family has faced since Oakley was diagnosed with a critical heart condition. Remarkably, after a life-threatening year-long wait, the young girl underwent a heart transplant and is now thriving at the age of eight.

The Werley family’s ordeal began in November 2023 when they brought Oakley, who was then just six years old, to the hospital for a procedure known as the Fontan, designed for children with a single functioning heart ventricle. What was anticipated to be a routine surgery soon took an unexpected turn. Following several hours in the waiting room, Kennidi and her husband, Braden, received grave news from Oakley’s surgeon. Her heart was too complex for the planned palliative surgery, and her prognosis was dire, with only about two years left to live without a transplant.
“I never imagined we would find ourselves on this road,” Kennidi reflected. “Her heart was failing, and we were faced with the heart-wrenching reality that we needed to secure a transplant for her survival.” In January 2024, Oakley was officially listed for a heart transplant, but her condition rapidly deteriorated, necessitating her admission to the hospital for continuous monitoring.
The waiting period proved to be an emotional rollercoaster for the family. Kennidi described it as “extremely hard,” acknowledging the constant fear of losing precious time. Watching her daughter connected to an IV pole day after day was a profound struggle; however, Oakley’s resilience played a crucial role in lifting the family’s spirits. “Oakley is such a bright light,” Kennidi said, highlighting her daughter’s joy and love for life, which made the wait a little more bearable.
After a year spent in the hospital, the family finally received the call they had hoped for—a suitable donor had been found for Oakley. The news brought a mix of emotions, as Kennidi recognised the joy they felt was simultaneously intertwined with the grief another family was enduring. “Words will never be enough to express our gratitude for the gift of life that was given to our daughter,” she stated.
The surgery itself was a 13-hour ordeal, but the results were immediate and stunning. “Her once blue lips and purple fingers were now a beautiful pink!” Kennidi expressed with excitement. “Every day she got stronger and stronger. It was truly a miracle to witness.” Now, with her new heart, Oakley is not just surviving but thriving. She is actively involved in gymnastics and dance, and relishes spending time with her siblings.
Kennidi describes the life her family enjoys now as a “true gift,” filled with energy and joy, something they had once feared might not be possible. “It’s a life we never could have imagined for Oakley,” she shared. This remarkable turn of events has compelled Kennidi to utilise her social media platforms to advocate for organ donor awareness.
In a recent viral video, she poignantly reflected on the past year, expressing gratitude to Oakley’s “little hero”—the donor who ultimately gave her daughter a second chance at life. “One year ago today… we had no idea what the future would look like. We just never could have imagined this life for Oakley,” she wrote. “Her little hero’s legacy lives on in the most beautiful way, all because of a yes.”
Through her storytelling, Kennidi encourages others to cherish each moment, emphasising that the seemingly mundane instances are, in fact, the significant ones. “Those are the big moments—ones we will dearly miss and those for which we prayed so hard,” she stated, reflecting on the 16 months they spent away from home during Oakley’s recovery.
