King Charles has surprised many by making a visit to a significant British warship that holds a name with which he is very familiar. At 76 years old, the King went aboard one of the United Kingdom’s latest aircraft carriers, which bears his former title, the Prince of Wales. The vessel, which is seven years old, was named in honour of him when he was the heir to the throne. Following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, in September 2022, Charles ascended to the throne. The HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier is the sister ship to the HMS Queen Elizabeth and was constructed during the same period. As the Commodore-in-Chief of Aircraft Carriers, King Charles arrived at the ship around 2:30 p.m. local time on March 4. During his visit, he interacted with the ship’s crew as they underwent the final phases of their pre-deployment training in the English Channel, situated between the southern coast of Britain and France. As part of the day’s events, King Charles witnessed F-35B Aircraft conducting carrier deck landing exercises and gave a brief address to the sailors gathered in the Hangar. In his speech, he expressed his sincere appreciation on behalf of the nation for the remarkable contributions and personal sacrifices made by the service members and their families in the line of duty. Reflecting on his own tenure in the Royal Navy, which included qualifying as a helicopter pilot in 1974 and serving in the 845 Naval Air Squadron, King Charles recounted personal memories from his naval aviator days. Notably, he highlighted his time commanding the minehunter HMS Bronington in the final nine months of his naval service, describing it as a formative and cherished experience. The King noted the complexities and teamwork demanded for operating on an aircraft carrier, acknowledging the dedication required in ensuring the seamless functioning of all ship components. The HMS Prince of Wales is the largest ship in the Royal Navy, with a construction cost of approximately $4 billion. It has the capacity to accommodate over 700 service members, which can increase to a maximum of 1,600 personnel when fully equipped with aircraft and associated staff. The vessel is capable of hosting more than 30 fighter jets and four helicopters, offering a significant operational presence for the Royal Navy.
King Charles’ visit to the aircraft carrier comes shortly after his hospitality towards Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk on March 2. This meeting followed an intense exchange between Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on February 28. The gathering at Sandringham was described as warm and cordial, emphasising the King’s international diplomatic engagements as the Head of State. In a parallel display of the royal family’s support for the British armed services, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh participated in a training exercise on March 3 conducted by the Queen’s Own Yeomanry in Cumbria, northern England.
