Former television personality Jen Shah, well-known for her role on “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City,” has opened up about her time in prison and the creative beauty routines she developed while incarcerated. In a candid interview with PEOPLE magazine, Shah, who was sentenced to nearly three years for her involvement in a national marketing scheme, discussed her experiences at a federal prison camp in Bryan, Texas, where she found herself contemplating past decisions and striving for personal growth.

During her second interview since her release from prison in December 2025, Shah, 52, detailed how she adapted her beauty regimen using limited resources available to her. With a monthly commissary allowance of £360, she ingeniously crafted DIY skincare products from unconventional items. “I had to figure out how to do my skincare while I was there,” she explained. “Hemorrhoid pads—which contained witch hazel—became my go-to astringent, along with laundry soap.”

Shah’s makeshift routines not only catered to her skin but also gained popularity among fellow inmates, prompting her to earn the nickname “Ulta at prison.” “Many women started adopting my regimen,” she recounted, adding that she couldn’t resist stocking up on beauty supplies. “My husband would chide me, saying, ‘You need to buy food this week. Please do not buy any more hairspray!’ There was a constant fear that supplies would run out, so I felt compelled to have a backup,” she laughed.

Despite those moments of levity, the reality of her prison sentence was jarring. Upon her arrival, Shah admitted to feeling overwhelmed. “When I walked in, it took my breath away,” she recalled. The initial atmosphere was far from the ‘Camp Cupcake’ image often portrayed; it was prison, and she felt the stark difference immediately. The following weeks were a test of her resolve as she adjusted to a new daily existence that felt foreign.
Reflecting on her situation, Shah remembered the emotional turmoil she faced during her first night in custody. Lying in her top bunk, she was struck by the gravity of her new life. “I just cried silently, unsure how I would cope with my circumstances,” she shared. The next morning, an abrupt wake-up call epitomised the harsh environment of prison life, further solidifying her new reality.
Yet, Shah found ways to incorporate humour and resilience into her routine. Describing her prison attire, she mused, “It’s not orange, it’s khaki. It’s a little better; you could pretend you were in Burberry or something.” In between moments of levity, she dedicated her time to self-improvement and confronting personal traumas, particularly the loss of her father, which had driven her to unhealthy coping mechanisms in the past.
Determined to utilise her time wisely, Shah embarked on a journey of introspection amid the prison’s challenges. She expressed, “Knowing I’d be away from my family, I decided to make the most of every day. I wanted to take a hard look at myself and through various treatment programs, address the issues I’d long avoided.” She acknowledged that facing her grief, particularly regarding her father’s death, required significant effort, but emphasised the importance of healing to become a better version of herself.
Now, back at home, she is on probation wearing an ankle monitor, adjusting to life beyond bars. “My days are simple; I’m home with my dogs, keeping busy with various home improvement projects,” she disclosed. This newfound focus on productivity is coupled with a sense of gratitude for the little things she once overlooked.
Shah’s journey towards redemption includes a commitment to addressing the harm caused by her past actions. She apologises sincerely to the victims of her crimes, pledging to repay over £6 million in restitution. “I am here, accepting my responsibility. It is my mission to ensure that these people are compensated,” she stated.
In sharing her story, Shah aims not only to reflect on her own transformation but to offer insights about humility and growth stemming from adversity. Her experiences have left a significant mark, inspiring her outlook as she navigates life post-incarceration. As she continues her path of self-reflection, Shah appears determined to honour the lessons learned from her tumultuous past.
