Family Mourns After 2 Friends Die from Apparent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: ‘My Heart Is Broken in Pieces’

Tragedy struck a family and a community in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, as two high school friends lost their lives to apparent carbon monoxide poisoning. The victims, identified as Litzy Flores, 16, and Yeferson A. Flores Ramos, 17, were found unresponsive in a car on East Berkley Lane during the early hours of Sunday, March 2. Despite efforts to save them, both teenagers were pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Following the devastating incident, two separate GoFundMe campaigns were set up for Litzy and Yeferson, who were both students at James B. Conant High School. Speaking about her son Yeferson, Maria Del Carmen vividly recalled moments from his life and expressed profound grief over the tragic loss. Yeferson’s sister Kenzi shared her disbelief and heartbreak, questioning the circumstances surrounding her brother’s death.

Litzy was a sophomore and Yeferson a senior at their high school. Principal Julie Nowak described them as cherished members of the school community, with Yeferson intending to enlist in the U.S. Army after graduation. The principal also highlighted Yeferson’s recent participation in the school’s International Fair representing Honduras, emphasizing the impact the two teenagers had on their teachers and peers.

Addressing the Conant Community, Principal Nowak expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Litzy and Yeferson, pledging support for the families and friends affected by the tragedy. The school provided therapists in every class to assist students in processing their grief, urging families to continue supporting their loved ones in mourning. Efforts are underway to repatriate Yeferson’s body to Honduras for his funeral arrangements.

Authorities believe the deaths of Litzy and Yeferson were accidental, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. Hoffman Estates police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office have been working to unravel the circumstances leading to the teenagers’ untimely passing.
