Former star of *The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City*, Jen Shah, has opened up about her decision to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, describing the experience as “heartbreaking.” Shah, who spent more than two years in federal prison, expressed feelings of disappointment towards her fans and loved ones during a candid interview with PEOPLE magazine.
Shah was arrested in March 2021 in connection with a nationwide telemarketing fraud operation that targeted vulnerable individuals. For 16 months, she proclaimed her innocence, even selling merchandise declaring herself “Not Guilty” and “Free Jen Shah.” However, in July 2022, just weeks before her scheduled trial, she made a surprising decision to plead guilty, prompting questions about what led to her change of heart.
Describing her guilty plea as the hardest choice she has ever faced, Shah told PEOPLE, “It was heartbreaking. I felt like I let a lot of people down.” Following her release in December 2025 to home confinement after serving 33 months in a Texas federal facility, the former reality star is now seeking a second chance with the public.
In her interview, Shah detailed her transition from believing she was operating legitimately in her marketing career to realising the impact of her actions. “I had to think about my family: putting them on the stand, putting them through a trial and still possibly losing? I couldn’t do that,” said Shah about her familial considerations that contributed to her reversal. She acknowledged the broader impact of the fraud on victims, expressing deep regret and a newfound understanding of the consequences that stemmed from her lack of oversight.
“I would never want my family to be taken advantage of,” she noted, emphasising that she understood the destructive outcome of her actions, even if she had not directly contacted victims. Shah is currently working to repay $6.6 million in restitution and is focused on demonstrating her accountability for her role in the scheme.
Shah also reflected on how the public may perceive her following her guilty plea. She expressed hope that people would recognise her as more than the allegations that have surrounded her. “I am a mother, I’m a wife — I’m a whole person. While I have made mistakes, it’s about how you come back from that,” she said.
