A heartwarming reunion has taken place between a dog and her owner after a separation of over three years. Joshua Shelton, from California, has been reunited with his beloved Boston terrier, Béa, who was stolen from his front porch in July 2020. The circumstances of their spirited reunion highlight both the emotional bond between pets and their owners and the role of animal rescue organizations in reuniting lost pets with their families.

Béa had gone missing in an instant while Shelton briefly stepped away, leaving him devastated and desperate to find her. Over the years that followed, he dedicated himself to locating his dog, utilising various methods such as distributing flyers, pursuing leads, and sharing her story on social media. However, as time passed, Shelton found himself grappling with a painful reality; hope was becoming increasingly elusive.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Shelton candidly explained, “If I’m being honest, after a couple of years, the hope started to fade—especially this past year. It gets harder to hold onto something you can’t see or prove is still out there.” Nonetheless, he never completely lost faith in the possibility of reuniting with Béa, motivated by stories of successful reunions he had encountered online. “I’d come across stories of people being reunited with their pets years later… and it would make me think… why not me?” he reflected.
Shelton’s fortunes took a remarkable turn when a friend shared a post from the animal rescue group Wags & Walks. The post featured a Boston terrier listed for adoption, named “Kit.” Upon viewing the photo, Shelton was overwhelmed with emotion and instinctively recognised his long-lost pet even before reading the accompanying caption. “When I saw the Instagram post, I broke down in tears,” he recounted. “I knew instantly it was Béa.”
Witnessing Béa’s distinctive appearance after so much time apart left Shelton without doubt. “She has such a distinct face and presence… She’s always had a way of communicating through her eyes,” he noted. This recognition led him to contact the rescue group immediately, which resulted in their first meeting since her disappearance.
On the day of the reunion, Shelton described the surreal moment when Béa walked towards him. He recalls, “As I walked back to my car… I saw her starting to walk toward me—and in that moment, I just broke down. It didn’t feel real.” However, the initial encounter was bittersweet as Béa appeared to greet him with joy, yet seemed confused, almost treating him like a stranger.
Despite the initial uncertainty, the bond was clearly still present. “The second we pulled up to my apartment, she jumped out of the car, walked straight up the stairs, and went right to my apartment like she’d never left,” Shelton said, with a sense of relief and joy. For him, this was a significant moment. “That’s when it hit me—she remembered.”
The reunion timing was particularly remarkable, as Béa had been scheduled to meet another prospective adopter just a day prior to Shelton reclaiming his dog. This fortuitous turn of events added another layer to the emotional weight of their reunion. Shelton expressed his gratitude, saying, “Honestly, it still doesn’t feel real… I’m incredibly grateful to that family… That one decision gave me my dog back.”
Shelton also acknowledged the vital role played by Wags & Walks, her foster caregiver, and the community members who helped identify Béa. “Reunions like this remind us why we do what we do,” said Lesley Brog, the founder of Wags & Walks. “Every dog deserves a safe, loving home, and there’s nothing more meaningful than helping them get there.”
Now reunited, Shelton is eager to rebuild his relationship with Béa and fill the lost time with love and companionship. “I don’t take a second of it for granted,” he said, reflecting on the joy of having his furry companion back in his life. The reunion serves as a heartfelt reminder of the enduring bonds between pets and their owners, and the tireless work of rescue organisations in reuniting families.
