A popular coffee shop chain, EL&N, has come under scrutiny after receiving a disheartening food safety rating of just one out of five, highlighting significant concerns regarding its operations. This particular location, situated in London’s bustling St Pancras Station, has been found in need of “major improvements” according to UK food safety officials.

The inspection that led to this rating took place in December and was conducted by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Despite the report mentioning that the café maintained good cleanliness and condition of its facilities and infrastructure, it raised alarms about hygienic handling of food. Key areas including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and food storage failed to meet required standards, necessitating urgent changes.
The FSA defines food safety as involving “systems or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat.” This includes evidence that staff are well informed about food safety practices, alongside the assurance that standards will be upheld moving forward. EL&N’s low rating suggests that these essential requirements are currently not being met at the St Pancras site.

In response to the findings, a spokesperson for EL&N assured the public that they are working diligently to rectify the highlighted issues. The café stated, “We are addressing the rating with the utmost urgency,” adding that they have implemented strict precautionary measures and adhere to comprehensive cleanliness protocols.
The spokesperson also mentioned that the café operates within the high-footfall environment of the train station, acknowledging that external factors, such as pest issues, pose a challenge. However, they assured that robust internal measures were put in place to tackle such concerns.
EL&N, which stands for “Eat, Live & Nourish,” has garnered a reputation for its aesthetically pleasing, Instagram-friendly decor, offering a range of coffee, sandwiches, and pastries. The café chain, founded in London in 2017, now boasts 35 locations internationally, including cities such as Milan, Paris, Dubai, and Kuala Lumpur. It is interesting to note that the majority of EL&N’s other U.K. outlets have been awarded the highest food safety rating of five.

Describing itself as the “world’s most Instagrammable café,” EL&N has attracted a significant following, with over 950,000 users on Instagram eagerly engaging with its vibrant aesthetic and innovative menu. Yet, this recent rating poses a serious challenge to its brand image and reputation.
As EL&N grapples with this blow to its credibility, it raises important questions regarding food safety practices, especially in high-traffic areas such as transport hubs. The café’s swift acknowledgment of the issue and commitment to improving standards reflect a crucial step in recovering public trust.
With competition in the café market being fierce, maintaining a high level of food safety is imperative for any establishment, particularly one with EL&N’s popularity and profile. Patrons and enthusiasts will surely be watching closely to see how the café addresses these pressing concerns in the coming weeks.
To ensure they deliver safe and quality food, EL&N’s response and subsequent measures will play a significant role in determining their future success in one of the UK’s most iconic train stations.
