Briel Adams-Wheatley, a content creator from Salt Lake City, has developed an unwavering passion for swimming, an activity that has profoundly influenced her life. Born without arms or legs, Briel has embraced the water since childhood, thanks to her parents who introduced her to swimming as a way to combat the summer heat.
Her childhood often revolved around visits to the Farmington City Swimming Pool, where her family made it a point to spend every summer cooling off in the water. “Because I have no limbs, I struggle more than most to regulate body temperature,” Briel explained in an exclusive interview. In the blistering summer heat, she often experienced hot flashes severe enough to cause fainting, prompting her parents to seek solutions that would keep her comfortable.

Initially, Briel’s parents were uncertain about how to teach her swimming skills. It was her father who took the plunge—literally. One day, he playfully tossed her into the pool, an act that might have shocked onlookers but was crucial for Briel’s learning. “I sank straight to the bottom, but he jumped in to rescue me, saying, ‘If you’re going to be in the water, you need to know how to float and swim,’” she recalled. That moment sparked the beginning of her swimming journey, which turned out to be life-changing.
Through dedication and practice, Briel learned to swim and eventually gained the confidence to conquer the high dive—a feat that left spectators in awe. “I would plead with my brothers to join me on the high dive,” she shared. “I would sit at the edge for ages, feeling everyone watching me.” It took some encouragement from her family to push her off the edge, but each leap into the water further solidified her love for swimming.
Fast forward to a couple of years ago, and that same love for the water played a significant role in a life milestone. At her wedding, Briel and her husband Adam celebrated their nuptials by jumping into her brother’s backyard pool, a moment that encapsulated the joy of her childhood summers. Now, as she transitions into a new chapter of her life, Briel has decided to recreate this special moment in a manner that reflects her personal growth.
Briel’s evolving relationship with swimming and her family has also inspired her to redefine her wedding plans. “I asked my brother if we can use his backyard again so that we can recreate that pool jump,” she said excitedly. It’s an opportunity for her to honour her past while embracing her present and future.
Away from the pool, Briel has become a prominent social media figure, using her platform to advocate for a greater understanding of disability. With each video she shares of herself enjoying swimming and life with her husband, she aims to challenge stereotypes and broaden public perception. One of her videos showcasing a playful cannonball contest with her partner has attracted over 75 million views, while other light-hearted clips have also gone viral.
Briel often encounters individuals who initially underestimate her abilities. “When I meet new people, they sometimes talk to me as if I can’t comprehend them,” she noted, emphasising the importance of recognition and respect for people with disabilities. “Once they realise I’m fully capable, just like everyone else, their perspective shifts completely.”
Through her experiences, Briel reinforces a powerful message: disabilities should not define an individual’s identity or limit their capabilities. “The world needs to expand its understanding,” she stated. “Having a disability doesn’t equate to being less normal. All we seek is the same treatment and opportunities that others enjoy.”
Briel Adams-Wheatley’s journey serves as an inspiring reminder of resilience and the transformative power of pursuing one’s passions. As she continues to swim, advocate, and share her life with a growing audience, she is not only living authentically but also paving the way for broader acceptance and understanding of disability in society. Her story is a testament to the idea that with courage and support, everyone can achieve their dreams, regardless of their challenges.
