The bus, which was travelling from Kushtia towards the capital city of Dhaka, crashed into the river near a ferry terminal in the Rajbari district. Eyewitness reports suggest that the vehicle may have toppled while attempting to approach the ferry at Daulatdia.

The Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) provided updates on the situation through posts on social media, revealing that rescuers have so far recovered 26 bodies. Of these, 23 were retrieved by emergency services, while two bodies were found by local villagers and one was discovered by a navy diver.

In their translated communication, the FSCD reported the composition of the deceased: seven men, eleven women, and five children (four boys and one girl). The local authorities are working diligently to confirm the identities of the victims and to provide support to the grieving families.

In a ray of hope amidst the tragedy, eight survivors were successfully rescued from the water, comprising three men and five women. They were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital; however, the situation turned grim as two of the women were later pronounced dead at the Goaland Upazila Health Complex.

Rescuers have faced significant challenges during their recovery efforts, with strong water currents and heavy rainfall hampering operations. Dewan Sohel Rana, an official from the FSCD, highlighted that these adverse conditions have complicated the ongoing recovery process. Consequently, a comprehensive search operation has been employing the resources of four fire service units, ten divers, and assistance from the Army, Navy, police, and the Coast Guard, alongside the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA).

Witness accounts narrate harrowing experiences leading up to the accident. Kalam Hossain, a survivor, recounted his ordeal: “I was in the bus. I got out and was standing on the pontoon. Shortly after, in the blink of an eye, the bus with passengers sank into the river.” Hossain mentioned that he lost personal belongings, including his backpack and important documents, during the chaos.

The local community has been gathering along the riverbank, anxiously awaiting news of potential survivors or updates on the missing passengers. The scene has been one of heartbreak, as family members are faced with the unbearable reality of loss and tragedy.
