Over its impressive 175,000 square feet and enveloped by 75 acres of exquisitely designed gardens, the Biltmore Estate is renowned as America’s largest privately owned home. Since its completion in 1895, it has fascinated visitors with its opulence and historical significance. Now, more than a century later, Luminere aims to breathe new life into this historical gem, offering an immersive evening experience that is unlike any other.
Luminere will feature an elaborate combination of projection mapping, original music and narration provided by a member of the Vanderbilt family. The project has been brought to fruition in collaboration with Klip Collective, a Philadelphia-based design studio known for its cutting-edge installations. The original musical score will be performed live by the Asheville Symphony, ensuring that the presentations resonate emotionally with attendees.
Ricardo Rivera, co-creative director and founder of Klip Collective, explains that the experience is designed to take guests on a visual journey. The event will kick off with images from the estate’s storied past projected onto the building itself, before transitioning into the gardens where a variety of statues and other features come to life through innovative techniques. Rivera highlights the emotional and intellectual engagement that Luminere aims to encourage among the audience.
With over two decades of experience in projection mapping, Rivera notes that this project stands out particularly due to its scale. The installation will utilise an impressive 48 projectors, ensuring that even the finest details are vividly rendered. He reveals that around 16 projectors will focus on the house while the remaining 32 will create a magical atmosphere across the gardens, marking this as the largest installation he has ever worked on.
For Chase Pickering, the vice president of Biltmore House Guest Experience & Operations, Luminere holds significant personal meaning. As a fifth-generation Vanderbilt descendant, he finds it profoundly moving to see his family’s story portrayed through this artistic lens. He emphasises that seeing the gardens illuminated in the evening with beautifully crafted projections and the touching musical score offers an entirely new experience of the estate’s historical grounds.
A particularly special aspect of the event is the narration, which is performed by Chase’s mother, Diana “Dini” Cecil Pickering. He shares that her voice brings a warmth and accessibility to the narrative, allowing guests to connect with the history and heritage of the estate on a deeper level. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, as attendees express appreciation for her personal perspective and storytelling.
