In a recent interview, actress Taylor Dearden discussed the unique perspective she has on recognition in her role on HBO’s medical drama, “The Pitt.” At 33 years of age, Dearden has found that her portrayal of Dr. Mel King allows her to maintain a lower profile compared to her co-stars.

Dearden attributes this anonymity, in part, to the way her character is presented on the show. In an interview with Glamour, she remarked, “I get away with a lot more anonymity than everyone else because everyone looks the exact same outside of the show, but dolled up; they look like a glamorous version of their characters.” The contrast between her normal honey-blonde hair and the light brown hair she sports as Mel King often leaves others unable to immediately recognise her.
It appears that her understated presence keeps her somewhat shielded from the spotlight. Dearden noted that even on set, there are moments when her colleagues fail to recognise her. She recounted an experience where the director was waiting for her to come down for a rehearsal, despite her being right in front of them. “They always go, ‘Oh God. Yeah, sorry.’ It’s just like, ‘That’s all right. We’ll figure this out,'” she shared, reflecting on how she enjoys the opportunity to blend in.
In “The Pitt,” Dearden stars alongside actors like Noah Wyle and Katherine LaNasa. The series, created by R. Scott Gemmill, explores the tumultuous lives of professionals working at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Centre over the course of a compelling 15-hour shift. Having portrayed Dr. King since the show’s inception with its first season in 2025, Dearden has not only reprised her role for its current second season but also expressed a growing comfort in her performance.
“In the second season, I felt more at ease because I had a better understanding of how the trauma scenes would unfold,” Dearden explained. Reflecting on her initial experiences, she admitted that both she and her colleagues were somewhat apprehensive due to their uncertainty regarding the context of the dramatic scenarios they would encounter.
Beyond her role, Dearden has been open about how her personal experiences influence her portrayal of Dr. King. In a panel discussion, she revealed that she is on the ADHD spectrum and has used her own experiences as a source of inspiration for the character. “I gave myself advice in the mirror,” she remarked, illustrating her desire to bring authenticity to her performance.
While Dearden has not suggested that her character is diagnosed with ADHD, she does consider that Mel may be indirectly influenced by her sister’s autism. “If you have a sibling who’s more severely on a spectrum, the parents often don’t even notice that their other child is,” she explained. This perspective allows her to explore themes of masking and self-identity in her performance, noting, “With a lot of Mel, it’s just kind of unmasking and seeing what that looks like, and then also being like, ‘Wow, I’m kind of glad I mask sometimes.’”
As viewers continue to tune in, new episodes of “The Pitt” are set to air every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max. Dearden’s thoughtful approach to her role not only gives a deeper layer to her character but also highlights her skills as an actress keen on infusing her personal experiences into her performances. Through her reflections on anonymity and character exploration, she invites viewers into the complex world both on-screen and off.
