**New Bird Species Discovered in Japan: Tokara Leaf Warbler Identified**

Researchers from Uppsala University in Sweden have announced the discovery of a new species of bird, named the Tokara Leaf Warbler, on March 17. This significant finding sheds light on the avian diversity of Japan, specifically the Tokara Islands where the bird resides.
Before its classification as a distinct species, the Tokara Leaf Warbler was thought to be closely related to the Ijima’s Leaf Warbler. However, through a combination of in-depth DNA analysis and song comparisons, researchers established that these two warblers are indeed separate species.

Per Alström, a researcher at Uppsala University, emphasised the importance of employing genetic methods to unearth hidden biodiversity, particularly amid the global biodiversity crisis. He remarked that such techniques foster a comprehensive understanding needed for effective conservation efforts.
The Ijima’s Leaf Warbler typically inhabits the Izu Islands located south of Tokyo, while the newly identified Tokara Leaf Warbler is found much further southwest on the Tokara Islands, approximately 621 miles away.

The journey to confirming the Tokara Leaf Warbler as a separate species began a decade ago when scientists detected genetic distinctions in birds from the two island groups. These initial findings gathered momentum, leading to extensive studies involving fieldwork, museum specimens, and advanced DNA laboratory analyses.
In-depth genomic studies demonstrated pronounced differences between the bird populations of the Tokara and Izu islands. Notably, careful evaluations of their songs further substantiated the idea that they were not the same species. This research was a collaborative effort involving scientists from Uppsala and Gothenburg, alongside two Japanese research institutions.
The Tokara Leaf Warbler, scientifically designated as *Phylloscopus tokaraensis*, is significant not only for its unique genetic makeup but also because it marks the first new bird species to be identified in Japan since the Okinawa Rail was discovered in 1982. This particular bird, classified as *Gallirallus okinawae*, was found in the Yanbaru Forest on Okinawa Island.
Alström commented on the challenges in defining the Tokara Leaf Warbler, noting its cryptic nature. Visually, it bears a resemblance to the Ijima’s Leaf Warbler, but distinct genetic markers and variations in their songs indicate its unique status.
Despite the exciting discovery, there are concerns regarding the vulnerability of both the Tokara and Ijima’s Leaf Warblers. Low genetic diversity puts both species at risk from diseases and environmental changes. However, encouragingly, both warblers appear to be showing signs of recovery following previous population declines.
The Ijima’s Leaf Warbler is currently listed as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and is protected as a ‘Natural Monument’ in Japan. Given that the Tokara Leaf Warbler is considered at least as rare as its Ijima counterpart, researchers recommend that it be classified in a similar Vulnerable category and that its population trends be closely monitored for potential changes in the future.
