A talented young skier and aspiring filmmaker has tragically passed away following an avalanche incident in Japan. Kai Smart, aged 23, was buried by the avalanche while skiing and later succumbed to his injuries after spending time in a coma. His father, John Smart, confirmed his death in a heartfelt Instagram post shared on 23 March.

Following the avalanche, which occurred earlier in the month, Kai was airlifted to Canada on 19 March and underwent emergency medical treatment at Vancouver General Hospital. John Smart expressed the family’s profound grief in his social media tribute, saying, “It is with immense sadness that we have to let you know that our kind, brave, and beautiful son and brother Kai is no longer with us. We are beyond heartbroken, and there are no words to describe the pain we are feeling losing him so young.”
The circumstances of Kai’s passing were devastating, as he was reportedly affected by a severe lack of oxygen during the avalanche, which rendered him unable to recover. In his tribute, John also revealed that Kai was an organ donor, which meant a lasting legacy: “His heart is still beating in someone else, and his organs are keeping four other people alive.”
Describing his son as a multi-talented individual, John shared a glimpse into Kai’s vibrant life. “He was a warrior, a mountain man, an explorer of the world, a lover of people from all walks of life,” he wrote. Kai was an honour student who embraced a variety of adventurous pursuits, including skiing, surfing, and climbing. John remarked that Kai lived life with an intensity and passion that touched everyone he encountered.
The family is now organising a celebration of Kai’s life to be held in Whistler, where friends and family can come together to honour his spirit and legacy. John expressed his gratitude to those who reached out with messages of support during this challenging time. Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy also shared his condolences, stating, “There are no words. Sending you and your family love.” The sense of community and shared sorrow in the wake of this loss has been palpable, with many expressing how Kai’s light impacted their lives.
Originally from Whistler, Canada, Kai Smart graduated from the University of British Columbia in May 2025. He had also recently completed work on a film entitled “Tien Shan Dream,” which showcased a daring two-week glacier traverse connecting remote research stations in Kazakhstan. The film is currently available for streaming on various platforms, including Apple TV+ and Roku.
The film is described as documenting the adventures of a team of international skiers navigating treacherous alpine terrains for scientific purposes, highlighting the critical research conducted in these challenging environments. John Smart founded Monument Ski Camps in Whistler in 1992, where Kai spent his early years honing his skiing skills, making the sport a fundamental part of his life.
