Royal Caribbean International has announced the cancellation of over 20 cruises scheduled aboard its vessel, the Freedom of the Seas, for the summer of 2027. These affected departures, set to occur between May and September of that year, have left many passengers disappointed as they received notification of the cancellations via email this week.

According to reports from the unofficial Royal Caribbean Blog and The Travel, the cancellations are attributed to adjustments in itinerary planning. A spokesperson for the cruise line explained that their deployment planning is frequently reassessed based on demand, capacity needs, and other considerations relevant to the fleet as a whole. “As part of this process, we’ve made the decision to redeploy Freedom of the Seas to Southampton in 2027,” the statement added. Consequently, previous bookings have been rendered void due to the ship’s home port change, which will alter the popular routes it was intended to take.

The Freedom of the Seas, which accommodates 3,926 guests, had scheduled a variety of itineraries including 9-night cruises to Aruba and Curaçao, shorter 5-night trips to the Dominican Republic and CocoCay, and 4-night getaways to the Bahamas. The decision to cancel these sailings, however, does not leave affected guests without recourse. Royal Caribbean is allowing them to rebook on alternative vessels or receive a full refund.
Guests impacted by these cancellations are being contacted directly and presented with different rebooking options. They can opt to automatically transfer to the Wonder of the Seas for a four-night cruise from Miami, or choose from the Adventure of the Seas or the Jewel of the Seas for various 3-night and 5-night voyages. For those unable to find a suitable alternative, a complete refund is available, covering both the cruise fare and any prepaid amenities.
Royal Caribbean’s cancellations come at a time when the cruise industry has faced various disruptions. Carnival Cruise Line has also recently cancelled 11 sailings from its Carnival Firenze ship that were set for the autumn of 2026. The cancellations were similarly attributed to changes in itinerary planning, with affected customers given the choice between rebooking and receiving a full refund.
Both cruise lines have expressed their apologies to those impacted by the changes, aiming to provide seamless options for their guests. Carnival stated, “We have apologised to our impacted guests and are offering them the option to rebook another Carnival cruise with their cruise fare protected on a comparable sailing in similar accommodations, along with an onboard credit.”
The measures introduced by these companies reflect a commitment to customer service, ensuring that while disruptions occur, passengers are afforded flexibility in adjusting their travel plans. As the cruise industry continues to evolve, such itinerary changes may become more commonplace, necessitating greater adaptability from both cruise lines and their guests.
Despite the inconvenience, the opportunity to explore alternative voyages offers hope for those whose travel plans have been disrupted. The global cruise market appears to be finding its footing after languishing through years of uncertainty, and with adjustments to services and bookings, companies are working to reassure travellers of their commitment to quality and satisfaction.
As the summer of 2027 approaches, it remains to be seen how other cruise lines will adapt and respond to similar challenges. Both Royal Caribbean and Carnival are making efforts to ensure that changes are communicated effectively to their passengers, highlighting the importance of transparency in maintaining customer loyalty as the industry experiences a renaissance.
