In a heartfelt journey of renovation, Sarah Beckler is transforming her husband’s childhood home into a space that reflects their family while honouring its rich history. The Beckler family moved into the property in 2019, not out of a desire for a new fixer-upper or a design project, but rather out of necessity. They took on the responsibility of caring for Sarah’s husband’s sister, who has a developmental disability, following the death of her father from cancer.

With its roots steeped in family, the home had been in her husband’s family for decades, but needed an update to match the current lifestyle. Sarah describes it as a “builder-grade 1990s time capsule”. Despite her initial mixed feelings about leaving behind their charming century-old house, she recognised the potential of the ten-acre property where their young son could play freely amidst gardens and wooded trails.

The Beckler family’s decision to move was motivated by a commitment to family rather than a pursuit of a dream home, Sarah explained. “It was about family and making sure someone we love could continue to feel safe and at home,” she stated. “The renovations and making the space our own came later, and it’s been a journey ever since.” Sarah’s endeavours are guided by the support and blessing of her husband’s siblings, which allowed her to put her own mark on the home without erasing its history.

Her journey began with the living room, which initially felt stark and unwelcoming with its white walls and brown carpet. Wanting to create a cosier atmosphere, she opted for a bold blue accent wall, a colour she has always loved for its calming attributes. However, with financial constraints looming, professional help was off the table, so Sarah and her family adapted by engaging in a series of DIY projects at a manageable pace.
Since that initial transformation, the family has made significant strides in updating the home. They replaced the brown carpet with new flooring that gives the house a unified look while also completed renovations in both bathrooms, reimagined a bedroom as a family room, and modernised their son’s bedroom. Additionally, they undertook the task of updating the staircase and patio, with plans now underway to revamp the primary bedroom.
As the Becklers continue to update the home, Sarah is keen on preserving elements of the house’s history. For instance, when they wrapped the kitchen-to-living room opening with cedar boards, she intentionally left a nostalgic piece of wallpaper from her mother-in-law’s era exposed. To further honour the family legacy, she has brought several paintings by her husband’s uncle into the light, decorating the walls with reminders of those who came before them.
Looking ahead, Sarah has her sights set on the kitchen renovation, a project she considers vital as it serves as the heart of their home. “It’s probably the renovation I’ve been dreaming about the longest,” she reflected. “The kitchen is the hub of our home and the centre of our daily life.” Balancing aspirations for their home with the realities of ongoing projects, the couple plans to continue working methodically through each renovation without imposing strict budgets.
Beyond the interior of the house, Sarah envisions creating dedicated spaces that cater to her family’s activities, including an office and a music room for her husband and son. She hopes to expand their backyard garden and enhance their front porch, transforming it into a larger area where they can enjoy sunsets and socialise with neighbours. There’s also a desire to make the best use of their expansive ten acres, which includes trails in the woodlands and open fields.
Ultimately, Sarah’s renovations expand beyond mere aesthetics. They are representative of creating a home that respects the memories embedded in its walls while adapting to the lives of the family residing within. “More than having a perfectly finished home, I hope we continue to create a place that our family and extended families want to gather,” she expressed. With each project, Sarah aims to establish a lasting legacy that embodies the spirit of the Beckler family for generations to come.
