Paolo Zampolli, a former modelling agent renowned for facilitating the introduction of Donald Trump to his future wife, Melania, in 1998, has found himself in the midst of controversy. A recent report by The New York Times alleges that Zampolli contacted a senior Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official during a custody dispute over his son. However, Zampolli has denied claims suggesting that he sought to have the child’s mother detained and deported.

According to the Times, Zampolli reportedly reached out to David Venturella, a senior ICE official, after his former partner, Amanda Ungaro, was arrested on fraud charges in Miami. The article alleges that Zampolli indicated to Venturella that Ungaro, the former ambassador to the United Nations from Grenada, was in the United States illegally and suggested that her transfer into ICE custody might be beneficial in his quest for custody of their teenage son.
The report further claims that Venturella subsequently contacted ICE’s Miami office to ensure that Ungaro was apprehended by immigration agents before her release from jail. According to records cited by the Times, this action was framed as significant to someone within close proximity to the White House.
In his defence, Zampolli admitted to making contact with Venturella following Ungaro’s arrest, but emphasised that his intention was merely to gain insight into the legal implications of her situation, rather than to arrange for her detention. “I asked David what was going on because I did not know the process,” he stated, noting that he could not recollect whether he leveraged his association with the Trump family during the conversation.
While Zampolli helped bring the Slovenian-born Melania Trump into the United States and assisted in securing her visa, the former modelling agent distanced himself from the outcome of Ungaro’s arrest, asserting he had no role in her subsequent detention and deportation. The Department of Homeland Security has firmly dismissed any suggestion that Ungaro was targeted at Zampolli’s request, labelling such claims as unfounded.
The evolving narrative caught the attention of Ungaro, who expressed distress over the implications of these events. Now residing in Brazil, she stated to the New York Times, “It’s devastating that they could have affected what happened to me.” She alleged that Zampolli had pointed to a potential marriage and pathway to citizenship during their time together, but ultimately left her navigating a string of temporary visas.
Despite his controversies, Zampolli has maintained a position as a special envoy in the Trump administration, taking part in meetings with leaders from various nations, including Austria and Saudi Arabia. In a recent social media post, Zampolli celebrated the 20th birthday of Barron Trump, praising Melania as a commendable mother and expressing aspirations for his son to emulate her values. He has also frequently utilised social platforms to highlight photos taken outside the Oval Office, hinting at ongoing access to presidential circles.
Amid the scrutiny surrounding his ties to the Trump administration, Zampolli addressed his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier who has been the subject of numerous scandals. Notably, Ungaro arrived in the United States on Epstein’s private jet in 2002, although she has indicated that she did not engage further with him after that encounter.
Zampolli revealed that Epstein had once advised an Emirati businessman to steer clear of him, labelling him “trouble” and suggesting he “sells stories to the press.” Zampolli responded philosophically, remarking that inclusion on Epstein’s list of contacts indicated a level of significance. Nonetheless, both Zampolli and Ungaro have not faced any accusations of misconduct in relation to their connections to Epstein.
