Mom Charged After Remains of Missing Adult Daughter with Special Needs Are Found in Her Closet, Says Family Member

A 40-year-old woman from Southaven, Mississippi, has been charged in connection with the death of her adult daughter, who had special needs. Cynthia Clemons has been accused of abuse of a vulnerable adult and tampering with evidence following the discovery of her 20-year-old daughter, Mykryra Clemons, whose remains were found in a closet at their home.

Authorities were alerted to conduct a welfare check on Mykryra after her brother expressed concerns about her wellbeing, noting that he had not seen or heard from her since January. According to reports from local news outlets, the alarm was raised on the morning of 17 March when Mykryra’s brother contacted the police about his sister’s absence.

Upon receiving the call, officers encountered conflicting information regarding Mykryra’s whereabouts, prompting them to secure a search warrant for the family’s residence. The initial search conducted that same evening yielded no results, and officers returned the following morning to continue their investigation.

Tragically, on the morning of 18 March, police discovered what they believe to be Mykryra’s remains. The young woman, who had Down syndrome, was found in a state that has raised numerous questions about her care and the circumstances leading to her untimely death.

Rosie Atkins, an aunt of the victim, spoke to the media and revealed that Mykryra’s brother had made a disturbing discovery of a body bag in the apartment. “My nephew made a discovery to my brother yesterday, saying that he saw a body bag,” she recounted. She explained how the brother stumbled upon the gruesome scene when visiting the house and immediately decided to contact the authorities for assistance.

Atkins also shared details about the communication between Mykryra’s father and Cynthia Clemons. She claimed that when Mykryra’s father inquired about his daughter’s whereabouts, Clemons would often respond that Mykryra was staying with another woman who also had a child with Down syndrome.
