Aleksandra Kąkol, a 34-year-old Polish paediatrician and popular content creator, passed away on March 13 following a courageous battle with bile duct cancer. Known to many as “pediatryczka_ola” on social media, she had garnered a significant following through her engaging content and insights on child health.

Kąkol’s journey with cancer began in February 2023 when she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of the disease characterised by the growth of malignant cells in the bile ducts connecting the liver to the small intestine. At the time of her diagnosis, she was given just three months to live. In a heartfelt reflection, she shared her disbelief at the diagnosis, stating, “Healthy, young, fit, with no symptoms? This has got to be some kind of joke.” Unfortunately, as she soon learned, the gravity of her condition was all too real.
Despite the dire prognosis, Kąkol demonstrated remarkable resilience. She underwent multiple treatments, including a liver transplant, which extended her life beyond initial expectations. Two years post-diagnosis, she chronicled her experiences in a self-published memoir titled, *Look, I’m Still Alive*. Through her online platforms, Kąkol provided followers with regular updates on her health, sharing her experiences and photos from her treatment journey.
Her final social media update, shared on January 7, showcased a video of her walking in the snow. In this poignant post, she reflected on her decision to relocate to Spain during her treatment, emphasising her desire to pursue happiness amidst her struggles. “Many people were also surprised how I was alone after the illness. And I just wanted to live. Still chasing after happiness in life,” she wrote in the accompanying caption.
In a touching tribute released on March 19, her family shared the news of her passing and commemorated her life. They revealed that Kąkol had married just two weeks before her death, fulfilling a lifelong dream. “Today, we bade farewell to Ola—our beloved daughter, sister, and wife,” the tribute read. “She departed without pain, in peace, surrounded by the love of those closest to her.”
The announcement of her death resonated deeply with her followers, many of whom had admired her strength and positivity throughout her illness. Kąkol, who had over 36,000 followers on Instagram, was celebrated not only for her medical expertise but also for her ability to connect with others through her experiences.
Kąkol was interred at the Municipal Cemetery in Lubaczów, Poland, within her family’s plot. In addition to her heartfelt reminders of love and hope left behind, her family is in the process of organising a mass to honour her memory in the weeks to come.
Her story has undoubtedly touched many, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, hope, and the importance of cherishing each day, despite life’s unexpected challenges.
