In a heartwarming tale of survival and friendship, a rescue dog named Phoenix has emerged as a symbol of hope following a tragic incident at a dog meat farm in South Korea. In late 2025, a fire, sparked by a wildfire, engulfed the farm located in the Gyeongbuk Province, devastatingly resulting in the death of approximately 700 dogs. Phoenix was one of only eight fortunate canines to escape with her life.

The incident drew the immediate attention of local animal welfare organisations, including Humane World for Animals South Korea, which campaigned tirelessly for the remaining dogs to be relinquished for rehabilitation and adoption. As a result of their efforts, the farm owner agreed to surrender the surviving animals. Not only did these groups provide immediate medical care for the dogs suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, but they also played a significant role in advocating for the eventual ban of the dog meat industry in South Korea, which will come into effect in 2027.

After receiving necessary treatment, Phoenix was flown to North America, where she began her recovery journey at a rehabilitation centre near Montreal, Canada. It was there that she found a new advocate in Tanya Thibaudeau, who described Phoenix as more than just a dog — she saw her as a “survivor with a beautiful soul.” With her gentle nature and endearing appearance, including droopy eyes and a small underbite, Phoenix captured Thibaudeau’s heart and she decided to adopt her.
Upon arriving at her new home, Phoenix was understandably hesitant, observing her surroundings with calm curiosity. Despite being a little underweight, her overall health had improved, with the visible signs of her tragic past limited to scars from her burns, which had thankfully healed. As Phoenix adjusted, Thibaudeau noticed that the dog would benefit from having a companion to ease her transition into a new and loving environment.
In a thoughtful move, Thibaudeau adopted Willow, a 16-month-old golden retriever who had previously been training as a service dog but had been unable to continue due to anxiety-related issues. Thibaudeau was optimistic that Willow’s gentle nature and desire for companionship would create a supportive atmosphere for both animals.
The introduction of Willow into the household proved to be a positive development. Thibaudeau noted that Phoenix absolutely delighted in the presence of another dog, exhibiting no aggressive tendencies. Willow, with his own fears and anxieties, found solace in Phoenix, as the two dogs formed a close bond that would prove beneficial for both.
“Having another dog around made her transition into her new home easier,” Thibaudeau shared. “At the same time, I think Phoenix is helping Willow too—just by being by his side and showing him that everything is okay. They are both helping each other heal.” This mutual support has been pivotal for both dogs, allowing them to navigate their respective traumas together.
The joy they bring to Thibaudeau’s life is profound. “Watching Phoenix and Willow run, play, and curl up together reminds me how powerful a second chance can be,” she reflected. The dogs have developed a strong camaraderie, often seen sharing a bed despite having their own substantial spaces, showcasing their unique bond.
Thibaudeau’s journey with Phoenix and Willow has left her with a deep sense of gratitude towards the rescue organisations that dedicate their efforts to saving animals in dire situations. She recognises that without their work, many dogs would never have the opportunity for a new beginning. “This experience has made me realise how much more I wish I could do. I am incredibly grateful for the work they do,” she stated.
Inspired by her own experiences, Thibaudeau hopes to encourage others to consider adoption as a viable option for bringing home a pet. “There are so many incredible dogs waiting for loving homes and a second chance. If I could, I would take them all,” she expressed, urging the public to embrace the opportunity to change an animal’s life.
Phoenix’s story serves not only as a reminder of the resilience of animals but also highlights the importance of compassion, advocacy, and the power of friendship in the healing process. As she continues to thrive, with Willow by her side, this duo stands as a testament to the transformative impact that love and care can have for those in need.
