A 21-year-old Virginia woman, Carly Rae Webb, has been sentenced to a year in jail for the severe abuse of a toddler under her care. On 13 March, Webb received a 12-month custodial sentence along with three months of probation, following a disturbing series of events that occurred between October 2023 and January 2024.

The court heard from Bedford County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Stacey Stickney, detailing the grim nature of Webb’s actions. Authorities reported that the victim, aged between 19 and 23 months at the time, suffered significant neglect and abuse at Webb’s hands. It was reported that Webb restricted the child’s access to food and water for as long as 21 hours and left the toddler confined in a crib for periods of up to nine hours.
A notable aspect of the trial was the testimony of Bedford County Investigator Michelle Alderson, who presented evidence of Webb’s abusive behaviour. During the investigation, Alderson reviewed months of video footage that depicted Webb’s neglect as well as her malicious mistreatment of the child. The footage revealed not only instances of physical violence but also troubling acts such as Webb pretending to shoot the child with a toy gun, striking the child in the face, and verbally abusing them with expletives.
Webb faced a total of 17 charges but ultimately pleaded guilty to five. In October 2025, a judge found her guilty on all charges, and at the sentencing hearing, Judge James Updike Jr. dismissed 12 additional charges, which had been filed against her. The sentence imposed included five years for felony child abuse, of which four years were suspended, while the concurrent sentences for five misdemeanor counts of assault and battery brought the total to nine years, despite her serving only one year behind bars.
Emotional victim impact statements were shared during the sentencing, with both parents of the child expressing their hope for justice. The child’s mother, particularly affected by the events, described feeling betrayed by Webb, who was once a close family friend. She conveyed to the court that the experience had been a “nightmare” from which she could not awaken, illustrating the profound emotional impact on the family.
