Live Nation Entertainment is currently facing scrutiny following the release of internal communications that reveal employees derogatorily referring to customers as “stupid” and boasting about extorting money from them. The messages were sent via the Slack platform between 2021 and 2023 and were disclosed in a recent court filing. This revelation has raised concerns about the company’s business practices amidst an ongoing antitrust investigation.

According to legal documents, conversations between Live Nation employees, notably Ben Baker and Jeff Weinhold, highlight discussions about excessive pricing strategies, including “ancillary fees” for services such as VIP parking. In one exchange, Baker remarked, “These people are so stupid”, while Weinhold claimed to charge up to $250 for VIP parking. Baker further expressed a sense of guilt over the exploitation of customers, stating, “I almost feel bad taking advantage of them.”

Such communications were spotlighted in the filing submitted to federal court by government lawyers, who argue that these candid discussions should be considered as evidence in the antitrust case against the major ticketing company. Their attorney emphasised the importance of including these internal exchanges, stating they reflect a disregard for ethical business practices.

In light of these messages, a spokesperson for Live Nation has distanced the company from the comments made by the employees. They declared that the exchanges do not align with the company’s values or operational standards. “The Slack exchange from one junior staffer to a friend absolutely doesn’t reflect our values,” the spokesperson stated, explaining that the leadership only became aware of the situation simultaneously with the public. They pledged that the matter would be investigated promptly.
Live Nation has been actively engaged in efforts to enhance customer experiences, highlighting that they have capped venue fees at 15% and invested significantly in enhancing U.S. venues and fan amenities. The spokesperson reiterated that the company’s success is intrinsically linked to ensuring positive experiences for fans.
This incident comes at a critical juncture for Live Nation, as it recently reached a tentative settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice regarding an antitrust case. This agreement will allow the company to maintain control of its popular subsidiary, Ticketmaster, while also imposing certain restrictions on exclusivity contracts and requiring the organisation to make portions of its platform accessible to competing ticket vendors.
Despite the settlement, uncertainty looms, as more than twenty states have yet to join the agreement, potentially paving the way for individual legal actions against Live Nation. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how these revelations impact the already controversial reputation of Live Nation and its affiliate businesses.
In the aftermath of these developments, the broader conversation about corporate ethics, consumer rights, and regulatory oversight in the ticketing industry is expected to intensify. As more details emerge, it remains to be seen how Live Nation will navigate these allegations and whether further actions will be warranted from regulators or the courts.
With the integrity of customer relations at the forefront, Live Nation is now tasked with addressing internal culture issues while working to reassure the public that it remains committed to fair and ethical business operations.
