Kiara Bowling, a 31-year-old student from California State University East Bay, is making strides in her recovery after suffering critical injuries when she was hit by a car driven by two young boys. The incident, which took place earlier this month in Oakland, has left her navigating a long and challenging rehabilitation process.

Bowling’s aunt, Karon Markham, spoke to reporters about the severity of her niece’s condition following the accident. “We didn’t even know that she would make it one month,” Markham stated, highlighting the extent of the traumatic brain injury Bowling sustained. However, after weeks of intensive care, Bowling has shown remarkable progress and has begun to walk and talk again. “What a blessing,” Markham added, referring to Bowling as a “walking miracle” as she continues her journey towards recovery.

Before the accident, Bowling was actively pursuing her academic goals. She had just returned from a summer programme at Yale University and intended to apply to Harvard Law School. On August 6, while walking her friend’s dog, Grizzly, she was struck by a Toyota sedan driven by two brothers aged four and seven. The children reportedly took their parents’ car keys while the adults were asleep, leading to the unfortunate incident.

The car crash not only altered Bowling’s life but also deeply affected her family. “It has turned the family’s life upside down,” Markham lamented. Despite her challenges, Bowling remains resilient, focusing on relearning fundamental skills that many take for granted. Markham explained that Bowling is now engaging in activities like putting puzzles together and colouring, demonstrating her determination to regain independence.

According to information shared through a GoFundMe campaign set up to support her recovery, Bowling sustained a diffuse axonal brain injury. This type of injury occurs when the brain shakes violently within the skull, causing tears in connective nerve fibres. Medical professionals have indicated that it may take as long as two years for her to fully recover, a daunting prospect for anyone, especially someone so young and active.

In an encouraging sign of her recovery, Bowling was able to reunite with Grizzly during her hospital stay. Markham described the heartwarming moment when Bowling greeted the dog with a simple, “Hi, boy,” illustrating the bond between them and the importance of companionship in her healing process.

The boys involved in the incident, who were also hospitalised for injuries sustained during the accident, have drawn attention alongside Bowling as the investigation continues. Their parents are reportedly cooperating fully with authorities as they seek to uncover the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Markham remains hopeful as Bowling progresses through her rehabilitation. “She has a long recovery ahead of her,” she noted, but added that each small step forward is a victory. With continued prayers and support from the community, Markham believes her niece will ultimately overcome these challenges.
