In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the premiere of season 2 of 1923 in Los Angeles, the 77-year-old actor discussed the potential fate of his character.

In the penultimate episode of Cobra Kai, Kreese engages in a tense showdown on a yacht with Terry Silver (played by Thomas Ian Griffith). During their altercation, a fuel tank is knocked over, leading Kreese to ignite an explosion by throwing his cigar into the spilled fuel. The resulting blast engulfs the boat, leaving their survival uncertain. Interestingly, their bodies are not shown in the aftermath scene.

Kove revealed that an alternative scene was shot where Kreese emerges from the water and appears to survive the explosion. However, the show’s creators decided to discard this ending as they felt it was too cliché. Kove explained, “A lot of the fans think that the character, he should have come out of the water and survived, [and] we did shoot a scene like that.”

According to Kove, the possibility of Kreese’s survival was always ambiguous given his character’s history of unforeseen returns. He expressed satisfaction with the character’s development throughout the show, particularly appreciating the moments of vulnerability portrayed in Kreese’s arc. Kove stated, “I’ve been pushing vulnerability for this character for a long time, and sometimes he gets it, sometimes he doesn’t. But the way it ended … it just was rich.”
