Identified victims of the shooting are Allan Russell, aged 61, Michelle Russell, 60, and their daughter, 38-year-old Deonna Stewart. The shooter, Vaughn Stewart, 37, was Deonna’s husband and the father of their three children. According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Deonna and Vaughn had been living separately at the time of the fatal incident.

The sequence of events unfolded in the early hours of the morning, around 5 a.m., when the police received reports of gunfire. Berkeley Township officers responded promptly and observed a man entering the Russell residence. Shortly thereafter, more gunfire was heard, prompting the officers to enter the premises, where they discovered Allan and Michelle’s bodies, both apparently victims of gunshot wounds.
As the officers worked to secure the scene, they found three young children present in the house. Thankfully, the minors were unharmed and are now safe. Authorities later discovered Vaughn Stewart suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital.
Evidence from the scene revealed multiple shell casings outside the Russell home, indicating that the violence extended beyond the interior of the house. Tragically, investigators also located Deonna’s body roughly 50 yards from the residence, suggesting she had attempted to flee before being pursued and shot by Vaughn.
Deonna and Vaughn’s three children, who are aged an infant, 3, and 5, were in the home during the attack but appeared to have escaped physical harm. Their future now hangs in the balance, filled with uncertainty following the loss of their immediate family.
Community members and neighbours have expressed their shock and sadness over the incident. A neighbour described the grandparents, Allan and Michelle, as “the most amazing people,” noting their Jamaican heritage and their careers in the medical field. Their untimely deaths have left many heartbroken, stirring memories of kindness and generosity.
Authorities have yet to release information regarding a potential motive for Vaughn Stewart’s actions, leaving many to speculate on the circumstances leading to such a tragic event. Domestic violence experts urge those in similar situations to seek help and resources available to them.
