Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. In a press briefing held on September 28, Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy reported that one parent was arrested in connection with the matter. He commented that the other parent is an officer in a neighbouring jurisdiction, and noted that they were not involved in the arrest. The identity of the arrested parent has not been disclosed.

During the briefing, Chief Bialy emphasised the quick response of the daycare staff, praising their efforts in securing the firearm and addressing the situation promptly. “I want to specifically recognise the daycare staff for their swift and responsible actions,” Bialy expressed. He stated that their intervention played a critical role in preventing a potentially dangerous scenario from escalating further.
Bialy also conveyed that upon reviewing footage of the event, he found it “shocking” to see a young child retrieve the handgun from a backpack. While no injuries were reported, Bialy underscored the severity of a loaded weapon being accessible to a toddler. He reassured the community, stating, “There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time,” and highlighted the importance of firearm safety in preventing such incidents.
The police investigation is ongoing, with assistance from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. Chief Bialy noted that there was no evidence of ill intent from those involved in the incident, attributing the situation to a failure in securing the weapon properly. He stated, “It really falls back on safe security of a firearm, making sure that we know where our firearms are located, that they are not accessible to anyone.”
As a precautionary measure following the incident, the family involved has been unenrolled from the Children’s World Early Learning Center, as the facility prioritises the safety and security of all children and staff. A representative of the daycare confirmed this decision and stated that the centre remains devoted to ensuring a secure environment for every child and family.
Additionally, the daycare has announced plans to implement security measures such as searching backpacks upon entry to the facility. This response aims to reinforce the commitment to safeguarding the children under their care.
As inquiries continue, the community is left with a reminder of the essential need for stringent firearm safety practices. The incident has sparked conversations on proper storage and handling of weapons, particularly in households with young children.
The Canton Police Department and representatives from Children’s World Early Learning Center have not provided further comments beyond the initial statements. The police force has urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility in securing firearms to prevent potential tragedies in the future.
