A tragic incident has shaken a community in San Bernardino County, California, following the death of 26-year-old Emily Panuco. Reports indicate that Panuco died after a brutal attack by three dogs while she was attempting to protect her five-year-old son.

According to a release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the incident occurred on Friday, February 27, at approximately 3:30 p.m. local time. Panuco and her son had been visiting her mother’s residence in Big River when the attack took place. They had gone there to meet some puppies that were only a few weeks old.
The young boy approached a cardboard box where the puppies were kept, which seemingly provoked the adult dogs on the property. Among the three dogs involved in the incident was the mother of the puppies. In a desperate bid to shield her son, Panuco intervened, only to be attacked herself by the three adult dogs.
Tragically, Emily Panuco sustained multiple severe bite wounds during the incident. Despite efforts to respond to her injuries, she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that her son also suffered injuries, sustaining two significant bites but was transported to a hospital where he received treatment. Fortunately, he was later released and is now recovering.
In a swift response, the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT) Animal Control euthanised the three adult dogs involved in the attack following the incident. This decision has drawn attention as discussions about pet owner responsibilities and safety measures become increasingly prevalent in local communities.
Following Panuco’s untimely death, a GoFundMe campaign was established to assist with funeral costs and to support her husband and two children, a six-year-old and a seven-month-old. The campaign has already raised over £23,000, reflecting the community’s desire to support the family during this difficult time.
Richie Panuco, Emily’s husband, is now faced with the overwhelming burden of navigating life without his wife, while also caring for their two young children. A message from the GoFundMe organisers described Richie’s loss as “unimaginable” and encouraged the community to come together to provide the needed support.
