Eddie Vedder Recalls Chaotic Horseback Ride with Bruce Springsteen: ‘I Was Trying to Act Not Terrified’

Eddie Vedder, the lead vocalist of Pearl Jam, recently shared an amusing yet nerve-wracking story on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, detailing a chaotic horseback riding experience he had alongside music legend Bruce Springsteen. This incident, which took place during a visit to Springsteen’s home, further emphasised Vedder’s longstanding fear of horses.

During the interview, Vedder, now 61, admitted that he has never been comfortable around horses. He recounted the day he and their wives, Jill Vedder and Patti Scialfa, ventured out for a ride. The outing took a dramatic turn when Vedder’s horse veered off the designated trail and into a dense wooded area, leaving him to navigate the unexpected situation.

“I’m terrified of horses, and that ride with Bruce did not help anything at all,” Vedder confessed. Despite his trepidation, he tried to maintain a brave front, telling himself not to exhibit fear. “I was like, ‘I got this…’ You know, don’t let the shark know you’re scared,” he joked, adding a light-hearted touch to his story.

Springsteen attempted to guide Vedder through the riding process, but things quickly escalated when Vedder’s horse took off unexpectedly. Describing the experience, he recalled desperately trying to maintain control, stating, “What I remember is surfing the horse and looking, ‘Where am I gonna jump? Where am I gonna jump?’” Witnessing the commotion were their wives and others, all shouting instructions in a chaotic attempt to help.

Looking back, Vedder noted that Scialfa observed the horse’s behaviour was “very odd,” leading her to suggest that the animal may have been “barn sour.” After the initial chaos, the horse repeated its bizarre behaviour, prompting Vedder to reflect that it was rather fortunate he did not sustain any major injuries during the ride. “In the end, Bruce said that was pretty good horsemanship that I, you know, didn’t crack my head,” he quipped.

In addition to recounting the horseback incident, Vedder discussed his long-standing friendship with Springsteen, highlighting the musician’s admirable qualities. He spent considerable time praising Springsteen, stating, “All I could say is everything you imagined him to be, you’re not even halfway there,” emphasising the depth of Springsteen’s character as both an artist and a friend.
