A 44-year-old man appeared in court on Monday, March 2, facing serious charges in connection with the tragic death of a 25-year-old woman in Japan. Itaya Hiroki is accused of encouraging the woman to consume excessive amounts of tequila before allegedly taking her to a hotel with the intention of engaging in sexual activity.

The Nagoya District Court heard that the tragic events unfolded on May 7, 2023. According to prosecutors, Hiroki, a regular patron of a local bar in Nagoya’s Naka Ward, had requested that a server introduce him to the woman, who had just met him. It was during their time together that he allegedly convinced her to drink a staggering 32 shots of tequila within a mere 90 minutes.
Hiroki has been charged with the intent to intoxicate the young woman, as he reportedly asked her if she was capable of drinking alcohol before persistently encouraging her to continue consuming tequila. He is said to have posed the question, “You can still drink, right?” further pushing her to keep drinking throughout the evening.
Despite consuming a substantial quantity of alcohol, the woman purportedly declined Hiroki’s advances to accompany him to a hotel. Several reports indicated that he made inappropriate touches, including groping her breasts over her clothing, during their time at the bar.
The evening culminated when Hiroki eventually took the woman to a hotel in a taxi. However, he later abandoned his attempts to initiate sexual relations when he noticed her deteriorating condition due to her intoxication. Tragically, the woman was later discovered unresponsive in the hotel and was pronounced dead.
Prosecutors revealed that the cause of death was hypoxic encephalopathy, a serious condition resulting from acute alcohol poisoning. Such circumstances have raised grave concerns about the behaviours exhibited by Hiroki on that night.
In court, Hiroki admitted to having urged the woman to drink but firmly denied any sexual intentions. His defence is resting on the assertion that he did not plan to assault her.
Hiroki faces multiple charges related to the incident, including indecent assault causing death and attempted kidnapping for indecent purposes. As the trial progresses, the court is tasked with weighing the evidence presented by prosecution and defence.
