British singer-songwriter Absolutely, born Abby-Lynn Keen, has recently made waves in the music industry with the release of her sophomore album, “Paracosm.” Launched earlier this month, the album delves into the fantastical dimensions of childhood, viewed through the lens of adulthood, and showcases her eclectic musical style.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Absolutely expressed her enthusiasm for the new project, stating, “I’m excited to share it. I think it’s really special.” The album features her hit single “I Just Don’t Know You Yet,” which experienced viral success last year, setting the stage for her musical journey.

Coming from a musically inclined family, Absolutely has the support of her sisters, RAYE and Amma, both of whom are celebrated artists in their own right. RAYE, famed for chart-toppers like “Escapism,” has made a significant mark on the global stage, while Amma has collaborated with notable musicians, including JoJo and FLO. The trio, managed by their father Paul, is currently on a world tour, with hopes that the youngest sibling, Katelyn, might also follow in their musical footsteps.
Reflecting on her upbringing, Absolutely reminisced about the rich musical environment in her childhood home. “Everything about my home life was music,” she recalled. Her sisters often sang, while their father played the piano and produced music, creating an atmosphere saturated with creativity and tunes. This early immersion laid the groundwork for her own passion for music.
Despite the musical backdrop, it was not until Absolutely was a teenager that she began to pursue music seriously. “I used to hide away in my bedroom and sing little covers with Smule,” she explained. A pivotal moment came when she plucked up the courage to ask her father to record together, an experience that ignited her interest in songwriting and production. By the age of 13, she was crafting her own beats and writing songs.
With her sister RAYE already making waves in the music industry, Absolutely found inspiration in her sibling’s journey. “Seeing her create that atmosphere with her music made me think, ‘Wow, this is so special,’” she shared. Witnessing RAYE’s success instilled in Absolutely a belief that she too could carve a path in music without the limits often faced by newcomers.
Initially performing under the name áB, Absolutely decided to rebrand herself to better reflect her identity and sound. “That name was really hard to find on DSPs, and it felt time for a rebirth,” she explained. Her sister RAYE pitched the name “Absolutely,” which resonated with her. “It’s such a definitive word. There’s no room for doubt. I wanted to embody that in my artistry,” she said.
Absolutely’s touring experience has played a crucial role in her artistic development. Having previously supported RAYE on tour, she overcame her initial stage fright and gained confidence performing for her sister’s audience. Now, as she embarks on a new tour with both RAYE and Amma, she cherishes this unique opportunity to bond and share the stage with her siblings.
As for “Paracosm,” Absolutely approached its creation with a renewed focus. Unlike her first album, “Cerebrum,” where she indulged her creative instincts without much structure, her new work involved a more thoughtful and intentional process. “I wanted everything to mean something,” she stated, emphasising the importance of tapping into childlike wonder during the songwriting process.
The titular track and the themes within “Paracosm” connect with listeners on a personal level, particularly those navigating heartbreak while holding onto hope. “The lyrics are very honest and open,” she said, crediting the relatable nature of her songs for their viral success on platforms like TikTok. The song’s universal themes resonate deeply, creating a cathartic experience that listeners find uplifting.
Touring with her sisters has made this journey even more rewarding for Absolutely. Sharing the stage in large arenas and performing their joint song “Joy” has strengthened their bond, transcending the challenges of living apart. “It’s such a beautiful way to end the night,” she remarked.
While the music industry may tend to label Absolutely as just “RAYE’s sister,” she is confident in her unique artistry and the distinct direction her music takes. As she continues to forge her path, Absolutely hopes her album inspires listeners to rediscover their own childlike sense of wonder and imagination.
With “Paracosm,” Absolutely invites fans into a world of creativity and introspection, a testament to her rich heritage and the profound impact of her upbringing in a family devoted to music. As she continues to evolve as an artist, her journey is one to watch closely.
