Tom Jones, the iconic 86-year-old singer, has shared the difficult ordeal he faced while battling pneumonia, which required hospitalisation for a week and forced him to postpone two concerts at the end of October. The Welsh crooner articulated his near-death experience during a performance in Los Angeles on 4 November, where he expressed his fears about his health and the toll the illness took on him.

Recalling the intimate moment with his audience, Jones candidly admitted that he thought his time was coming to an end. “Oh well, this is it. You’ve had a wonderful life, Tommy, but it’s over right now,” he reflected, as reported by various outlets, including the New York Post and the BBC. He went on to praise the medical staff at UCLA for their excellent care, saying, “I must say this, they really did a wonderful job. So I’m here.”

Despite the serious nature of his illness, Jones was determined to return to the stage. He shared his resolve, stating, “I said, ‘I’ve got to get back on the stage. This is where I belong. I can’t live without this, believe me.'” This passion for performing has remained a driving force in his life, even after the health scare.
Originally slated to perform in Los Angeles on 26 October, he had to announce his illness just hours before the show, attributing his condition to a severe case of the flu rather than pneumonia. In a social media update, he expressed his disappointment, writing, “I’ve had a great time these last few weeks, completing 20 shows and singing for wonderful audiences across the USA, but unexpectedly I’ve been hit with a bad case of the flu.” Following medical advice, he was forced to postpone not only the Los Angeles concert but also a subsequent show in San Diego.
The San Diego show eventually took place on 3 November, with Jones eager to reconnect with fans. His dedication to his craft remains unfaltering, as he has consistently prioritised live performances even amid personal adversity. Following his LA concert, he is scheduled to appear in Highland, California, on 6 November, continuing his tour across the United States.
In addition to his recent health challenges, Jones has also celebrated a major achievement. He recently emerged victorious as the winning coach in Season 14 of The Voice UK, with his contestant, Cate McHugh, triumphing in the competition on 31 October. Despite this success, Jones has expressed disappointment about not returning as a coach for the next season.
In a heartfelt message shared via Instagram in September, he addressed his fans regarding ITV’s decision not to invite him back for another series. “To be clear, I did not want to leave The Voice as I love the show and really appreciate the audience,” he explained. His sentiments about being sidelined for a “refresh” of the show were clear, as he lamented, “The only thing I know right now is that there’s never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who’s still pretty good at his job.”
ITV later responded to his comments, affirming their fondness for working with Jones over the past nine years. They clarified that discussions about his involvement in the upcoming series are ongoing, indicating that there may still be an opportunity for him to participate in some capacity.
As Tom Jones continues to navigate the ups and downs of fame and health in his later years, his commitment to music and connection with fans remains strong. With his upcoming performances and recent accolades, it is clear that the showbiz icon is not ready to step back from the limelight just yet.
