**Tragic Incident at Sea: Four Killed in Clash with Cuban Coastguards**

In a harrowing encounter off the coast of Cuba, four individuals lost their lives and six others sustained injuries when Cuban border guards opened fire on a speedboat allegedly en route from Florida. The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 25, as tensions flared in a confrontation described by the Cuban authorities as an attempt to prevent a terrorist infiltration.
According to a statement from Cuba’s Interior Ministry, the speedboat was intercepted approximately one nautical mile northeast of the El Pino channel. The Cuban vessel asked for identification from those on board, leading to a violent exchange. The statement claimed that the passengers of the speedboat initiated gunfire, wounding one officer in the process.
The aftermath of the confrontation revealed disturbing findings. Authorities reported the recovery of numerous firearms, including assault rifles and handguns, alongside homemade explosives, bulletproof vests, telescopic sights, and camouflage clothing from the speedboat. Cuban officials asserted that the ten armed individuals aboard had intentions of carrying out terrorist acts within the country.
The deceased have been identified as Michel Ortega Casanova, while the others remain unnamed. Speaking to the media, Misael Ortega Casanova, Michel’s brother, described him as having developed an “obsessive and diabolical” desire for freedom for the Cuban people. He shared that Michel had spent two decades living in the United States, was a truck driver, and was married with a daughter who is currently expecting.
The U.S. government has begun its own investigations into the event. Florida’s Senator Marco Rubio confirmed that officials in Washington are attempting to ascertain whether the individuals involved, reportedly Cubans residing in Florida, hold American citizenship or permanent residency status. In his statements, Rubio mentioned, “We have various different elements of the U.S. government that are trying to identify elements of the story that may not be provided to us now.”
Among the six individuals who were injured, two have been identified as Amijail Sánchez González and Leordan Enrique Cruz Gómez, both of whom are reportedly wanted by the Cuban government for their alleged roles in promoting and coordinating terrorist activities. The remaining injured passengers are identified as Conrado Galindo Sariol, José Manuel Rodríguez Castelló, Cristian Ernesto Acosta Guevara, and Roberto Azcorra Consuegra.
