This impressive milestone comes just weeks shy of her 38th birthday, which falls on April 1. Fancy, officially named Tracies Lil Kleberg, has reached the age of 37 years and 329 days, a testament to her robust health and longevity.

Fancy’s owner, Paige Sigmon Blumer, has had a long and enduring relationship with her since the late 1990s when they met at a training facility. Originally known as Josey Wales, Paige felt an instant connection upon seeing her. “I was immediately drawn to her strength,” Blumer recalled fondly. “She had such a loving presence, and I always trusted her to take care of me, no matter what.”
Blumer’s family purchased Fancy in June 2000 when Paige was just eight years old. At that time, Fancy was twelve. Blumer quickly decided that her horse deserved a name that matched her unique character, insisting to her parents that “she was way too fancy to have such an ugly name.” This playful renaming has since become a cherished part of their history together.
Remarkably, Fancy’s lifespan exceeds the typical expectation for an American Quarter Horse, which averages around 25 to 35 years. Blumer attributes Fancy’s exceptional longevity to a combination of factors: diligent veterinary care, a balanced diet, and above all, a nurturing home environment. “There’s no secret sauce,” she remarked, sharing that a loving atmosphere, reliable farrier services, and a knowledgeable veterinary team are crucial.
In her senior years, Fancy has faced a few health challenges, particularly Cushing’s disease, a disorder characterised by an overproduction of cortisol. This condition requires careful dietary management, something Blumer has diligently provided. To assist Fancy as her eyesight began to decline, Blumer introduced Rosie, a donkey that quickly became her best companion. The two animals have formed a bond, with Blumer jesting that they likely spend their afternoons reminiscing about the decades they’ve shared.
Despite her advanced age, Fancy continues to enjoy life and maintains a daily routine filled with gentle “granny walks” around the farm. These strolls, which occur twice a day, are not merely exercise but also a way for the bond between the two friends to flourish as they explore their surroundings together.
