A Wisconsin man is being celebrated for his heroic actions during a recent fire that broke out at the Superior & Sage Hotel in Superior, Wisconsin. The incident unfolded shortly before midnight, when Bill Zezza, who was staying at the hotel for a fishing trip, noticed flames erupting from the building.

In an interview with Northern News Now, Zezza recounted the terrifying events. “I’m amazed it ended up being this to tell you the honest truth, I think it should’ve never gotten to this point actually,” he said. His quick thinking and courageous efforts not only put him at risk but also protected fellow guests from potential harm.

As soon as he realised there was a fire, Zezza sprang into action. “So, right away I said grab some fire extinguishers,” he recalled. Armed with a fire extinguisher, he began to spray the flames while using the door as a makeshift shield. However, he soon found himself struggling as the heat intensified and the first extinguisher ran out. “It was so hot, and then the fire extinguisher quit, so I got another one,” he added.
Video footage from CBS News showed flames shooting from the roof of the hotel against a backdrop of snow on nearby vehicles. Fire crews were alerted to the emergency and responded quickly to the scene, but not before Zezza had exerted himself in an attempt to control the blaze.
Zezza continued to battle the flames, breaking glass in order to access additional fire extinguishers available throughout the hotel. “At first, it wasn’t that bad,” he mentioned. “I mean, I almost had it put out with a couple of fire extinguishers. If I could’ve had more fire extinguishers, I could’ve had it put out.”
Despite his determined efforts, he soon realised that the rising temperatures made it increasingly difficult to maintain access to the extinguishers. Ultimately, Zezza said he “went through every fire extinguisher in the building” before making the decision to step outside.
“I kept breaking the glass to get the fire extinguishers, and then I pulled the alarm,” he explained. Realising the flames were beyond what he could manage, he retreated outside to try tackling the fire from another angle near a nearby Kwik Trip convenience store.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the fire, but Zezza’s spontaneous bravery stood out amidst the chaos of the evening. The determination he displayed has led him to be praised not just by guests who were evacuated but also by those who later heard about his actions.
“I’m amazed it ended up being this to tell you the honest truth,” Zezza remarked, reiterating his belief that the situation should have never escalated to such a level.
As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, the hotel has yet to release an official comment concerning the incident. Multiple fire stations were deployed to manage the emergency, showcasing the collaborative efforts of various responders in addressing the situation swiftly and effectively.
Zezza’s actions have certainly not gone unnoticed, and his commitment to safeguarding others during such a perilous event serves as a reminder of the power of individual courage in the face of danger. Community members are now reflecting on his bravery, while officials seek to understand how the incident occurred and what measures might be improved to prevent similar events in the future.
