The incident was reported to authorities shortly after 1:25 a.m., at which point responding officers arrived to find the property engulfed in flames. Firefighters immediately faced extreme difficulties as they battled the blaze, with Northlake Police Chief Ken Beres later revealing that a “mayday” call was issued at one point due to the emergency situation.
Upon entering the house, emergency personnel discovered both women inside. Although they were unconscious, responders reported that they were still breathing. Susan Palos was taken to Loyola Hospital, where she was eventually pronounced dead. Maricarmen Wilkerson, a resident of Chicago and a family member of Palos, was transported to Gottlieb Hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries there.

According to police, the two women were related as sisters-in-law. Friends and neighbours have spoken fondly of Susan, describing her as a kind individual who was often seen as a second mother by those close to her. Hopeful words emerged from resident Charmaine Miles, who highlighted the challenges Palos had faced over the past year, including the death of her husband.

Another neighbour, Christopher Pederson, shared how close Palos was to his family, expressing the heartbreak felt by those in their community. He mentioned that both women attended church together at Saint John Vianney, underscoring the strong ties that existed in the neighbourhood. “It’s just heartbreaking,” he lamented, reflecting the profound loss felt by many.
As firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the flames, the scene was described as being “full of smoke,” with visibility severely impacted. Pederson noted that it was challenging to see just a foot ahead in the dense smoke. The severity of the fire posed significant risks, not only to the residents but also to the firefighters.
Local authorities confirmed that no other individuals were present in the home at the time of the fire. In the immediate aftermath, an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the blaze, with investigators examining various aspects of the situation.
The Northlake community has been left reeling from the loss of two beloved members, with many expressing their grief and extending condolences to the families impacted by this tragic event. As details continue to emerge, the focus remains on understanding the circumstances that led to this heartbreaking loss of life, while the community comes together to support one another during this difficult time.
