Brenda Anguiano, a 27-year-old mother, recently opened up about her disappointing experience with rhinoplasty, shedding light on the struggles of self-image and the quest for personal acceptance. Four years ago, at the age of 23, Anguiano underwent the surgery in an attempt to address long-standing insecurities surrounding her nose. However, the results were not what she had anticipated.

In her conversation with *People*, Anguiano revealed that her decision to have the procedure stemmed from her desire to gain confidence. As a new mother of two, she sought a change that would feel personal and affirm her self-worth, believing that altering her nose would be transformative. “I truly believed that changing my nose would finally give me peace and confidence,” Anguiano stated. However, this change quickly turned into a source of regret.

During her consultation with a plastic surgeon, Anguiano expressed her wish for subtle refinements. She aimed to smooth out a slight curve in her nose while maintaining its original characteristics. “Nothing that would make it obvious I had surgery,” she recalled, wanting to preserve the “button”-like appearance she valued. Unfortunately, the outcome diverged significantly from her expectations.
Shortly after her surgery, once her cast had been removed, Anguiano found herself grappling with a sense of shock. “I remember looking in the mirror and instantly feeling this shock in my body,” she reflected. The change was so profound that she described the experience as identifying with a “stranger’s face wearing my body.” Anguiano’s journey with her new appearance turned into a painful emotional struggle that lasted for years, as she battled with the reality of her decision and what she termed an “out-of-body experience.”
In a poignant Instagram Reel shared on February 9, Anguiano spoke about her intense feelings of regret and the overwhelming sadness that followed the operation. “I went in believing all plastic surgeons are the same…but when I woke up, I did not recognise the girl in the mirror,” she shared. Her emotional revelations underscored the importance of thorough research and open communication with surgeons to ensure expectations align with possible outcomes.
Reflecting on her past, Anguiano has come to terms with the moments of her life that she spent criticising her previous appearance. Looking back at photographs from that time, she no longer sees just her nose; instead, she sees a version of herself that she now acknowledges as beautiful. “I look at those pictures now and think, ‘Wow… I was beautiful. There was nothing wrong with me,'” she expressed, grappling with the pain of realising that her insecurities led her to alter a face she once cherished.
Her experience has not only altered Anguiano’s view of herself but has also profoundly affected her emotional well-being. Despite her efforts to prepare for the physical recovery post-surgery, she found herself unprepared for the mental and emotional toll it would take. “No one prepared me for the identity shift,” she explained, noting the difficulty of confronting a different reflection in the mirror each day.
While there were days when she felt somewhat at peace with her appearance, there were also many troubled moments. Anguiano described her emotional turmoil, stating, “I cried for weeks. I avoided mirrors for months. I went into a deep depression, and it felt like I was mourning something I couldn’t get back.” This journey towards self-acceptance was arduous, yet ultimately, she believes it has fostered emotional growth.
Looking toward the future, Anguiano does not plan to undergo rhinoplasty again. Though she acknowledges that cosmetic surgery can be beneficial for some individuals, she wishes her own journey had stemmed from a sense of self-love rather than insecurity. Additionally, she expressed the need for careful consideration when selecting a surgeon, particularly one experienced with ethnic features.
Anguiano’s experience has also influenced how she interacts with her children. She emphasises the importance of fostering a positive self-image in them, ensuring they understand their inherent worth. “I’m very intentional about making sure they hear from me how perfect they are,” she said. Anguiano’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the complexities that can accompany the pursuit of physical changes, highlighting the essential need for self-acceptance and compassion.
