The modern-day retelling of the ’90s sitcom concluded with a special appearance by the iconic actor, bringing closure to the beloved franchise in a memorable way.
The Peacock reboot of the classic ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ has been a hit since its premiere in 2022, with Jabari Banks stepping into the role of Will in this contemporary adaptation of the story. Smith, who also served as an executive producer of the show, graced the finale with his presence, marking his first and only appearance in the series.
His appearance alongside Banks in the final episode, playing an unnamed character known as “OG”, provided sage advice and comfort to the young protagonist as he navigated his journey back to Philadelphia for college after settling into life in California. The creator of ‘Bel-Air’, Morgan Cooper, described the experience of seeing Smith and Banks together on set as “unforgettable” and a true full-circle moment in the making of the show.
Cooper shared that the reunion of the two actors was seven years in the making, reflecting on the time when the idea for the reboot was first conceived back in 2019. The emotional impact of having Smith on set was evident, with Cooper expressing his pride in Banks for delivering a heartfelt performance alongside the iconic actor.
Carla Banks Waddles, the showrunner of ‘Bel-Air’, revealed that having Smith appear in the finale was always part of the plan from the early stages of planning the season. The logistics of coordinating Smith’s involvement in the show presented challenges, with two different endings scripted in case his participation was not possible. However, the stars aligned, and Smith was able to join the cast for this significant moment.
Banks expressed his excitement at sharing the screen with Smith, especially during the final moments of the series, calling it a “truly poetic return” for the actor. The culmination of the show with Smith’s cameo provided fans with a sense of closure and nostalgia, bridging the gap between the old and new iterations of the beloved sitcom.
