In a bid to address the declining trend in children’s reading, Hachette Book Group and Hachette UK have declared their investment of $200,000 into the Raising Readers campaign. This initiative aims to foster a love for reading among children, promoting it as a source of entertainment and joy. The CEO of the publishing companies, David Shelley, expressed their dedication to elevating the Raising Readers campaign to new heights in the coming year. Shelley highlighted the significance of this investment as the year 2026 marks the 200th anniversary of Hachette Livre, indicating a strategic milestone for their commitment to promoting literacy.

The allocated funding from Hachette will be utilised to equip 200 underprivileged schools with classroom libraries, ensuring access to a diverse range of books for students. Additionally, the campaign plans to establish a minimum of 200 Little Free Libraries in underserved areas where access to books is limited. This initiative aims to distribute around 40,000 books to communities lacking adequate bookstore and library facilities. The provision of these resources is expected to benefit over 50,000 students, supporting literacy and educational advancement.
Furthermore, the Raising Readers campaign intends to engage at least 200 volunteers in delivering reading and literacy support, along with conducting 200 author visits to classrooms in the upcoming year. Ancillary resources will be directed towards enhancing children’s reading proficiency through tutoring, coaching, and family literacy programs. The objective is to bridge the gap in literacy rates, particularly in demographics with below-average reading levels.
Hachette Book Group emphasised the holistic benefits of reading for children, extending beyond academic outcomes to encompass mental well-being, communication skills, and personal growth. Megan Tingley, President and Publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers at Hachette Book Group, commended the overwhelming support received from authors and partners for the Raising Readers campaign. She expressed confidence that the newly introduced initiatives would catalyse a substantial increase in young readers, both in the commemorative year for Hachette and beyond.
Collaborating with prominent figures like Reese Witherspoon and 23 organisations such as the American Booksellers Association, PEN America, and Poets & Writers, Hachette Book Group aspires to create a profound impact on children’s reading habits. By fostering partnerships and implementing strategic programmes, the publishing giant seeks to revitalise the culture of reading among the youth and address the prevalent challenges in children’s literacy.
The commitment of Hachette Book Group to invest in initiatives that nurture children’s reading abilities underscores the importance of promoting literacy as a fundamental skill for personal development and societal enrichment. As the Raising Readers campaign unfolds, it is poised to make a meaningful contribution towards cultivating a generation of avid readers with a lifelong passion for books.
